Tandem Coffee + Bakery

Tandem Coffee + Bakery is housed in a converted mid-century filling station on Congress Street in Portland's West End, and it is the cafe that comes up first whenever anyone writes about the city. Will and Kathleen Pratt roast the coffee themselves; the bakery, run alongside, turns out biscuits, pastries and cakes that account for most of the queue.

It earns a place in an alcohol-free guide for the simplest possible reason: it is a genuinely excellent place to drink something, and there is no alcohol involved at any point. That sounds trivial and is not. A large part of what a non-drinker actually wants is not a clever substitute for a cocktail but somewhere good to sit with a good drink, where the question never arises. Cafes of this quality do that better than any mocktail menu, because nothing about the transaction is a substitution.

The honest limitation is the clock. It opens at 8am and closes at 1pm, every day, and it does not bend. That is a bakery's schedule, not a bar's, and it means Tandem covers the morning and the very early afternoon and nothing else. Portland has a real evening problem for non-drinkers — Lava Kava is essentially the only room in the city keeping bar hours without alcohol — and no amount of good coffee at nine in the morning helps at nine at night.

Within its hours, though, it is a straightforward recommendation, and it sits in a walkable part of the West End near Bramhall and the Arts District.
