Vena's Fizz House

Vena's Fizz House opened on Fore Street in Portland's Old Port in 2013, and it did something almost nobody was doing then: it served a full bar menu in which every drink was zero-proof, built on house shrubs, bitters and natural ingredients rather than syrup from a gun. It was years ahead of the category, and for a long time it was the reason Portland had any alcohol-free reputation at all.

The Old Port room did not survive. It closed around 2021, the business shifted toward e-commerce and mixology supply, and the physical operation moved inland to the Dana Warp Mill in Westbrook — a converted textile mill about twenty minutes from downtown Portland. Then in 2025, after twelve years, the owners announced they were closing for good. New owners took it on instead, with the founders staying involved, and the Westbrook operation continues.

What it is today is a shop rather than a bar: craft mixers, shrubs, bitters, syrups, glassware and tools, sold to people building drinks at home. That is a narrower proposition than the original, but it is arguably the more useful one, because the hardest part of drinking well without alcohol is not finding a bar that will make you something — it is having anything decent in your own kitchen. A shop stocked by people who spent a decade making zero-proof drinks professionally is a rare resource.

Two practical notes. First, this is Westbrook, not Portland — it folds into the Portland metro for our purposes, but it is a drive. Second, the hours are strictly business hours, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and closed at weekends, which is unusual for a drinks business and catches people out. The company has also been reported working on a new Portland location in a converted West End church; worth watching, but not open at the time of listing. If it opens, Portland regains a genuine alcohol-free bar in the centre of the city for the first time since the Fore Street room closed — which would change this guide substantially.
