That's Kava

That's Kava occupies a storefront at 3394 South Broadway in Englewood, on the stretch of the Broadway corridor that runs south out of Denver proper. It is one of a small number of Denver-area venues that are alcohol-free by policy rather than by accident, and it says so directly on its own website: "We are an alcohol free establishment." The bar frames kava in explicitly harm-reduction terms — "Kava is a traditional root drink from the South Pacific Islands. It's a popular alternative to alcohol, promoting relaxation and a sense of calm without the drawbacks of inebriation" — and builds the rest of the room around that idea, with trivia, bingo and board-game nights running most nights and an 8am-to-2:30am trading day that outlasts almost every licensed bar nearby.

The menu is unusually explicit about what is in each drink, which matters because much of it is psychoactive. The kava section runs from House Kava, a lab-tested blend, through Premium Kava sourced from Fiji, Vanuatu or Hawaii, to Stone Kava made from high-kavalactone lateral root and Green Kava, a flash-frozen Fijian preparation. A separate teas section is built on kratom — Indonesian kratom in white, red and green strains, and freeze-dried Thai kratom with high mitragynine content — alongside non-kratom botanicals such as sakae naa, hirsuta and javinica. On tap there is That's Karma, which combines kratom with orange juice, spearmint, turmeric and black pepper, plus nitro kratom, house-flavoured seltzer and rotating local kombucha. Shots include Golden Glow Elixir made from lateral root, and Mucuna Matata, which adds mucuna to a Golden Glow base. The mocktail list — Majestic Mule, Manny's Painkiller and a Spicy Passion Fruit Paloma — layers kava or kratom extract over nitro kava. Anyone in recovery should treat this as a psychoactive venue rather than a neutral soft-drink bar: there is no alcohol here, but kava and kratom are not inert, and kratom sales are restricted to 21 and over under Colorado law.
