2119 W Brandon Blvd G, Brandon, FL 33511
The Bay has been trading on Brandon Boulevard since 2014, which makes it one of the longer-running kava rooms in Hillsborough County and considerably older than most of the category. It opens at 9:30am and runs to 11pm through the week, later at weekends, and it is the main alcohol-free option in Brandon itself rather than in Tampa proper — a distinction that matters, because Brandon is a suburb of well over 100,000 people whose evening economy is almost entirely chain restaurants and sports bars.
The room is fitted for staying: a pool table, comfortable seating, and a programme of late-night community events alongside wellness-room sessions. The venue's own line is that since 2014 it has been dedicated to providing a fun and welcoming atmosphere, and eleven years of continuous trade in a format that has seen a lot of openings and closings is reasonable evidence for the claim.
The drinks are kava, herbal and botanical teas, and craft non-alcoholic builds. Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific islands, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in the way alcohol is. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, so regular drinkers usually need less rather than more, and a first visit rewards a slow pace across an hour or two.
A point of history worth knowing: the lounge's social accounts still carry the handle from its earlier life as a vapour bar, and the business has evolved into its current kava-led form over time rather than opening as one. That is a common trajectory in Florida, where a lot of today's kava rooms began as smoke or vape shops, and it is part of why the category's menus are broader than the name suggests.
Which leads to the caution. **The Bay is known for an extensive kratom selection alongside the kava**, and on a menu of this breadth the two are easy to conflate. Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, and its principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a genuine withdrawal syndrome, several US states ban it outright, and its concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine derivatives are the subject of active federal scheduling. Kava carries no comparable dependence profile. If you are here because you are avoiding substances with a hold on you, order by name and ask what is in the cup.
