1903 Market St, Tampa, FL 33602
M.Bird sits on the roof of Armature Works, the restored 1910 streetcar barn in Tampa Heights that now houses a food hall and event space on the bank of the Hillsborough River. The bar occupies the top floor with skyline and river views, which makes it one of the more in-demand rooftop rooms in the city and a default choice for a group looking for a view rather than a specific drink.
Rooftop bars are usually poor ground for non-drinkers. The economics favour volume, the menu leans on frozen and sweet, and the alcohol-free option is whatever the soda gun produces. M.Bird instead prints a "Mocktails" section with four named builds, led by the Raging Bull — Seedlip with lemon, honey, watermelon and watermelon Red Bull, which is exactly the sort of high-energy rooftop drink the room actually calls for rather than a polite botanical spritz. Josie's Vacation, Berried Alive and Like a Virgin fill out the list.
The useful thing here is context rather than craft. Armature Works is where a great many Tampa evenings begin, and a group heading to the roof will not be choosing the venue based on its zero-proof credentials. Having four named drinks on the printed menu means the person not drinking is ordering from the same list as everyone else instead of negotiating with a bartender during a rush — which, in a busy rooftop bar on a Saturday, is the difference between being served and being managed.
Practical notes: expect queues at peak, the rooftop is weather-dependent, and the food hall downstairs is the fallback if the lift line is long. It is a full bar with a substantial cocktail list; the mocktail section is a real part of the menu rather than the character of the venue.
