Dive Bar on K Street is a downtown Sacramento institution for one reason: a large aquarium above the bar in which performers dressed as mermaids swim through the evening. It is genuinely strange and completely committed, and it has been drawing people in for years.

That matters here more than the drinks do. The recurring difficulty of a sober night out is not the absence of a good glass but the absence of anything else happening — in a conventional bar, drinking is the activity, and being the person not doing it leaves several hours to fill. Venues where something else is going on, whether that is pinball, mini golf, live music or a mermaid in a tank, solve the problem structurally rather than compensating for it. They are systematically underrated in alcohol-free guides.

The mocktails are real, named and on the printed menu: Cranberry Crab, Sailor's Delight and Pineapple Passenger, all fitting the nautical theme, plus further options. These are approachable drinks rather than technical ones, and the grade reflects a solid rather than an inventive programme.

The hours are the other significant point, and they are exceptional: 3pm to 2am, seven days a week, with no closed days. Look at the rest of this guide and the contrast is stark — Juju closes Sunday and Monday, Shangri-la opens four days, Bike Dog shuts Mondays, Teetotalist runs as an events programme. When a plan forms late or changes, Dive Bar is the Sacramento venue that will simply be open, and it will have something named on the menu for whoever is not drinking.

One thing to set expectations on: it is loud, it is busy at weekends, and it is unapologetically a spectacle bar rather than a quiet room. For someone newly sober who finds crowded drinking environments difficult, that may be the wrong choice, and Kupros or Wildwood would serve better. But for a group night out where one or two people are not drinking, the calculus flips — the mermaids give everybody the same thing to look at, and nobody is counting what is in anyone's glass.
