Basic Kitchen sits at 82 Wentworth Street, two blocks off King Street in downtown Charleston, in a bright, plant-filled dining room serving a seasonal, locally sourced menu that leans heavily vegetable-forward without being vegetarian, and accommodates gluten-free and vegan diners across most of the card. For a long stretch it was one of the most reliably non-alcoholic-friendly rooms in the city, and that reputation is well documented: The Zero Proof, which reviews venues specifically for alcohol-free hospitality, scored its drinks menu a perfect 10 out of 10, and the house beet margarita - a bright pink beet, apple, cucumber and lemon juice over lime - was featured in the Post and Courier's Liquid Assets column and was for years routinely ordered without tequila.

The August 2026 beverage list is narrower than that history suggests, and it is worth being plain about the difference. There is no zero-proof cocktail section and no non-alcoholic spirits on the printed liquor list; the beet margarita appears under Cocktails built on tequila blanco with beet, orange, lime and agave, and carries no alcohol-free notation. What the menu does carry is a titled Mocktails & Juice section holding BK Tropic Water (pineapple, mint, lime, sea salt, coconut water and blue spirulina), a Grapefruit Spritz of grapefruit, lavender agave, lemon and an orange juice floater, and Health Insurance, served hot or iced from turmeric, lemon, cayenne, ginger and honey. Three cold-pressed juices sit beside them - Bright Eyes, Super Green and Beets by BK - along with a seasonal local kombucha, bottled mineral water and Boylan soda under Fizzies, and a coffee and tea list running to a golden latte, a chai latte and a Matchaful matcha. The alcohol-free drinking options proper are Plus + Minus N/A Pinot Noir Rose from Australia, poured by the glass or the bottle, and Best Day N/A beer. The Charcoal Latte and Matcha Muchacha named on older versions of this menu are no longer listed, and neither the Virgin Bloody Mary nor the Virgin Moscow Mule appears on the current card. It remains a comfortable room in which to not drink, but the programme is now a modest one rather than the destination it was.
