Bula Kavananda is the Tampa-side room of the Bula group whose original, Bula Kafe, opened in St. Petersburg in 2009 and is generally credited as the venue that started Pinellas County's kava culture. This outpost sits in Seminole Heights and runs daily from 7am to 2am — a nineteen-hour day, which is the single most useful fact about it. Very little else in Tampa is open at either end of that range without alcohol being the organising principle.
The kava is sourced from Vanuatu, the archipelago where the drink is a civic institution rather than a wellness import, and it is served alongside ZEAL coffee, botanical and hemp teas, kombucha on tap, yerba mate and cacao shots. First-time visitors are given a shell of kava on the house, which is a small gesture that does real work: kava is genuinely unfamiliar to most people, it tastes like nothing else, and being handed one without having to commit money to the experiment is how a curious non-drinker becomes a regular.
The room is built for staying rather than passing through, in the manner of a nakamal — the Ni-Vanuatu term for the space where kava is drunk communally — and it draws a neighbourhood crowd rather than a destination one.
The caveat belongs here as at every kava venue and should not be softened by the coffee-house framing. Kava is alcohol-free but psychoactive and mildly sedating, with documented case reports of liver injury; many Florida kava bars also pour kratom, which acts on opioid receptors and carries dependence and withdrawal risk. Nothing served here contains alcohol. That is a narrower claim than nothing served here having an effect, and for anyone in recovery the difference is the whole question. For everyone else it is simply one of the easiest rooms in Tampa to spend an evening in without a drink.
