Grassroots Kava House opened in St. Petersburg's Edge District in 2017, founded by a former bank executive who came to kava as a way of managing stress and built a business out of it. That origin shows in how the room is set up: it is a working third place rather than a themed one — dog-friendly, stocked with board games, Wi-Fi throughout, open from 7am on weekdays and 8am at weekends, running to midnight every night.
The drinks list spans further than kava alone. Premium Vanuatu kava and kratom tea sit alongside locally roasted coffee, nitro cold brew, botanical teas, house-made sodas and kombucha, which means the room works for someone who wants nothing psychoactive at all as readily as for someone who does. That breadth matters more than it might appear: a venue that serves only kava is asking every visitor to opt into an unfamiliar substance, whereas one with a real coffee programme lets a group with mixed intentions sit at the same table.
The Edge District position puts it within walking distance of downtown St. Petersburg without being in the middle of the bar strip, which suits the format — people come here to stay for two hours, not to pass through between rounds.
The caveat is explicit in the venue's own description and belongs here too: Grassroots serves kratom alongside kava. Kava is psychoactive and mildly sedating with documented case reports of liver injury; kratom acts on opioid receptors and carries real dependence and withdrawal risk. Everything poured is free of alcohol, and none of it is inert. For a designated driver this is an easy recommendation; for someone in recovery it is a decision to make with the full picture. The Edge District position puts it inside walking distance of downtown without sitting in the middle of the bar strip.
