Mad Hatters Ethnobotanical Tea Bar

Mad Hatters has been open in north St. Petersburg since 2014, which makes it one of the longest-running kava rooms in a city that has more of them than anywhere else in the country. It is themed on Alice in Wonderland and commits to the conceit properly, and the effect is the important part: it looks like a bar, is laid out like a bar, and keeps bar hours — open until 2am most nights and 3am from Thursday to Saturday — while nothing in the building is made with alcohol.

That combination is rarer than it sounds and is the reason the venue matters. Most alcohol-free rooms close when cafes close, which leaves the hardest hours of the week uncovered: eleven at night on a Friday, when everyone else is still out. A room that runs to 3am is competing with bars on their own ground rather than offering a daytime alternative to them.

The menu is broad — kava, kratom, loose-leaf herbal teas, nitro coffee, kombucha and boba — with a hookah lounge on site, and the ethnobotanical framing is closer to a tea house than to a cocktail bar. Nobody here is pretending a drink is something it is not, which some people prefer to a mocktail shaped like a negroni.

The caveats need stating plainly and there are two. Mad Hatters serves kratom alongside kava: kava is psychoactive and sedating with documented liver-injury case reports, and kratom acts on opioid receptors with dependence and withdrawal risk. And the on-site hookah means tobacco smoke is part of the environment. Everything poured is alcohol-free. That is a narrower claim than substance-free, and anyone in recovery should weigh both points before going. For a designated driver or anyone wanting somewhere genuinely open late without alcohol, it remains one of the most reliable rooms in the city.
