Burden of Proof

Burden of Proof opened in South Pasadena in December 2024, and it filled a specific hole rather than a general one. Los Angeles already had non-alcoholic retail, but almost all of it sat on the westside; the San Gabriel Valley had none. Co-owners Obreanna McReynolds and Dean Peterson opened this as the SGV's first, and McReynolds told LAist plainly that they had always wished LA had something like it, especially on the east side. The shop's own framing of why it exists is worth quoting because it avoids the moralising the category often falls into: not drinking, for a night or a lifetime, should be just as fun and delicious as the alternative.

The range is the largest in the region - more than 450 non-alcoholic beers, wines, spirits and canned cocktails by the shop's own count, plus specialty goods and groceries. It covers the three quite different things people mean by non-alcoholic. There is dealcoholized wine and beer, made as wine or beer and then stripped. There are botanical spirits built from scratch to be their own thing, Pathfinder's hemp-and-root whiskey alternative among them. And there is the functional end - drinks formulated around adaptogens and nootropics, which do something rather than simply taste of something. Those categories behave very differently in a glass, and knowing which one you are buying is most of the skill.

Which is what the shop is really selling. McReynolds is candid that walking in and seeing all the products is intimidating, and the answer is the free tasting every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm - the single most useful thing any shop in this category can offer, because a bottle you dislike at $30 is what stops most people trying a second one. She has also described the part she finds most rewarding as watching customers in the shop start comparing notes with each other. Practical notes: the shop is closed Mondays, runs noon to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday and noon to 6pm on Sunday, and sits on Mission Street a few minutes' walk from the South Pasadena Metro A Line station, which makes it reachable without a car from much of the eastside.
