100 Channel St, San Francisco, CA 94158
Cavaña sits on the seventeenth floor of the LUMA Hotel at 100 Channel Street, overlooking Mission Bay, the creek and Oracle Park. The Infatuation describes it as a Latin American bar that manages to make Mission Bay feel as though it has been given the Miami treatment, complete with a dance floor and a DJ playing reggaeton, and notes that the crowd is a mix of dressed-up visitors and locals stopping for a drink and a bowl of ceviche before a Giants game. The bar runs to midnight from Sunday through Thursday and to 1am on Friday and Saturday, opening early on Saturday afternoons.
The non-alcoholic drinks are printed on the main cocktail card under a spirit-free heading, immediately after the full-proof list, and there are six of them — more than most licensed bars in the city carry, and covering a wider range of styles. Maracuyá is built on Almave, the de-alcoholised blue agave spirit, with Wilderton Citrus, an aperitivo, passionfruit agave and lime. The Phoney Mezcal Negroni combines a Peruvian agave distillate with Pathfinder amaro and Abstinence blood orange aperitif, giving the bitter-and-smoky profile that is hardest to reproduce without alcohol. Guava Fresca is lighter, made with a blood orange aperitivo, fresh lime, guava and soda water. Michelada-Nada uses a non-alcoholic cerveza with the bar's own michelada mix, which is a genuinely rare listing. Chicha Morada is the traditional Peruvian purple-corn punch cooked with pineapple, apple and cinnamon, and Bananito is a dessert-leaning build of spiced banana oat milk with a cold brew float. Fieldwork's non-alcoholic grapefruit blonde ale is stocked in cans alongside them, and a set of aguas and Mexican sodas — agua de piedra sparkling water, Coca-Cola Mexicana, Fever-Tree ginger beer and pineapple Jarritos — rounds out the alcohol-free half of the menu. Because the bar is on a hotel roof with a dance floor and live music, the practical value of six spirit-free builds is that a guest can spend a whole night out here on the same terms as everyone else at the table.
