Dear Irene

Dear Irene is a small, low-lit room on Brooks Street in downtown Bend, a few steps off the main drag near Drake Park, serving small plates and a tightly-made cocktail list. It is the venue Visit Bend's own zero-proof guide singles out for the specific experience of not being the odd one out — the situation where one person at the table is drinking and the other is not, and the bar makes that feel unremarkable rather than awkward.

The Path Less Taken is the drink that earns it. It is built on Pathfinder — the hemp-derived, distilled non-alcoholic spirit made in Oregon, bitter and herbaceous in a way that behaves like an amaro — with bitters, landing squarely in old fashioned territory: spirit-forward, aromatic, meant to be sipped slowly. That is the hardest register for a zero-proof drink to hit, because there is no citrus or fizz to carry it, and it is the register most non-drinkers miss most. There is also a Monkey Business, named for the mischievous-monkey wallpaper in the bathroom, which tells you something about the room's sense of humour.

The food is not an afterthought — Oregon crab arancini, king salmon tartare, the kind of cooking that makes a drinks-led room work as a full evening. Because the space is small and it opens only Tuesday through Saturday from half past four, booking is sensible, particularly at weekends and through the summer season.

Alongside Bar RBC a few blocks away, this is the strongest evidence that Bend's zero-proof scene has moved past mocktails-as-consolation into something built with intent.
