Deir Cafe

Deir Cafe takes its name from Deir al-Balah, the city in Gaza that owner Yousef Gumiza's family comes from, and which translates roughly as Monastery of the Date Palm. Gumiza has been explicit about why that matters to him: he wanted to invent something out of his own history rather than import a template, and the cafe is the result. The Nashville Banner profiled it in April 2026 as a cultural hub for the city's Muslim community, and WPLN, Nashville's public radio station, had featured it a year earlier in a story about Muslim-owned coffeehouses keeping late hours through Ramadan and beyond. There is a dedicated prayer space inside, which is unusual for a Nashville coffee bar and central to how the room is used.

The drinks are where the Mediterranean influence shows most plainly. The signature lattes are built on regional flavours - a Baklawa latte, a Golden Lotus latte with biscoff and caramel, a Strawberry Dubai Chocolate latte, a Banana Spice latte - and the cold refreshers are named in Arabic for what is in them: Roman for pomegranate, Ward for rose, Khokh for peach, and a passion fruit build the shop calls Passion Habibi. Matcha drinks, smoothies and pastries including croissants round it out, and nothing on the list contains alcohol. Gumiza's own line about the business is that they serve memories, traditions and a taste you will not find anywhere else.

One caveat worth stating plainly, because it decides whether this is an evening venue or not: the Hagan Street shop currently closes at 6pm, seven days a week. Gumiza's ambition is the late-night cafe - he told WPLN that night cafes are the thing his family loves and that people hang out until 1am - and that is exactly how the second Deir Cafe on Haywood Lane in Antioch now runs. For a night out, go to Antioch. For a quiet afternoon in Wedgewood-Houston, within walking distance of the gallery district, this is the one.
