400 N Orlando Ave Unit 109A, Maitland, FL 32751

Elevate runs 9am to 1am every day of the week from a unit on North Orlando Avenue in Maitland, and calls itself a next-level social lounge and kava bar — a space for people of all walks of life to connect and enjoy. It serves no alcohol.

What sets it apart from most of the Orlando field is that the drinks are properly built and properly named: Mango Sunrise, Clear Skies, Passion and Berry Energetic. That is a small thing with a large effect. A significant part of what people miss when they stop drinking is not the alcohol but the ritual of ordering something by name and being handed something that looks like it was made for you, and a menu of graded kava strengths does not supply that in the way a drinks list does.

Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific islands, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in alcohol's sense. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, so regular drinkers typically need less rather than more, and a first visit is best paced across an hour or two.

Maitland sits between Winter Park and Altamonte Springs on Orlando's northern edge, and a 1am close here puts a genuine late-night alcohol-free option within reach of a large stretch of the northern suburbs that otherwise has none.

The caution at this venue is the subtlest naming trap in the whole Florida kava scene, and it is the reason this entry spends a paragraph on it. **Elevate splits its menu into kava for unwinding and what it calls Mitra teas for daytime energy — and Mitra is Mitragyna speciosa, which is kratom.** Unlike "K-Tea" or a vein colour, "Mitra" is the plant's actual genus name, so the label is technically accurate while being almost completely opaque to anyone who does not already know the botany. A customer avoiding kratom could read that menu carefully, in good faith, and order it anyway.

The distinction is not academic. Kratom's principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a genuine withdrawal syndrome, several US states ban it outright, and its concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine derivatives are the subject of active federal scheduling. Kava carries no comparable dependence profile. Both are served here, from the same bar. Order by name, and if a drink is described as a Mitra tea, that is kratom.
