Jerry's Bar

Jerry's Bar occupies a corner building on West Laurel Street in Northern Liberties that spent decades as a general store, and the room still reads that way — tin ceiling, long wooden bar, the feel of a neighbourhood fixture rather than a designed concept. It keeps proper bar hours, to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and opens at nine in the morning at weekends for brunch.

The drinks list carries a printed "Mocktails" heading and four house builds beneath it, which puts it ahead of most corner bars in the city. The NA Toasted Coconut Espresso Martini is the one that shows the bar is trying: an espresso martini is defined by its foam, the dense pale head that comes from hard-shaking fresh espresso, and removing the vodka makes that head harder to build, not easier. Using cold brew with a toasted coconut simple syrup and coconut purée gives the shake enough fat and sugar to hold the texture, which is a real piece of bar thinking rather than a substitution.

The other three run lighter and all finish on club soda. Lady Lavender is citrus with a lavender simple; Sunflower Fizz uses a blackberry sunflower syrup with pomegranate and lemon; Hibiscus Breeze pairs hibiscus tea and grapefruit with a spicy lavender syrup, and hibiscus is the smart choice there because its natural tartness does what an acid would otherwise have to. Athletic Brewing covers the beer drinker at eight dollars.

The Philadelphia Inquirer covered Jerry's in January 2026 as part of the city's first large-scale Dry January bar crawl — a useful signal, because a bar that signs up for that is committing to serve those drinks well on the busiest possible night for people ordering them.

For a non-drinker the appeal is the format. This is a neighbourhood bar with a full kitchen and weekend brunch, not a cocktail destination, which means the social pressure is lower and the visit can be an hour or four. Four named drinks under a printed heading is exactly enough to get through an evening without repeating yourself.
