6909 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33138

Kava Kavern sits on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami's Upper Eastside, along the MiMo strip where the mid-century motels north of the Design District have gradually turned into restaurants and bars. It opens at 10am and closes at 1am, seven days a week, and serves no alcohol at any point in those fifteen hours. That span is the most practical thing about it. Most kava bars are evening rooms, which is fine until you want somewhere to sit at eleven in the morning or somewhere to end a night that is not a bar; a venue covering both ends of the day in one place is genuinely useful, particularly in a city where the default social setting involves a drinks list.

What the bar chooses to be known for is blending. Rather than presenting kava as a single traditional pour to be endured for its effects, Kava Kavern builds kava tea blends from what it describes as the freshest and organic ingredients, with the flavour combinations crafted by its own team. That approach addresses the single biggest barrier to kava for newcomers, which is the taste — the root is genuinely earthy and peppery, and the number of people who bounce off it after one shell is not small. Miami has one of the densest kava scenes in the United States, with rooms scattered from South Beach up through North Miami and out to Doral, so a bar here has to be distinct to survive, and a blending-led menu is a reasonable answer. Kava itself deserves the plain description this directory owes its readers: it is made from the ground root of a South Pacific shrub steeped in water, drunk socially across the Pacific for around three thousand years, and it contains no alcohol whatsoever. It is nonetheless a real relaxant with an intoxicating quality of its own, which is a meaningful distinction for anyone whose recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically.
