Miami Kava & Coffee

Miami Kava & Coffee is billed as the City of Miami's first kava bar, and its history supports the claim. It began in 2015 in a small Wynwood house trading as House of Roots, later Roots Miami Kava, before expanding across the city and settling its flagship room at 393 NE 59th Street in Little River. In 2025 it marked its tenth anniversary — a long run in a category where most venues are younger than the trend that produced them.

Everything served is plant-based and zero-proof: fresh-brewed traditional kava, herbal teas, house-brewed yerba mate, specialty coffee and pressed ginger shots. The named pours have the loose humour of a room that grew out of a house rather than a business plan — the Cheech, Mr. T, Icey Tea, the Fruity Rooty kava shot.

What it has become is a hub for Miami's creative community, hosting open mics, live music and local art showcases. That matters more than the drinks list for the audience this directory serves: a venue that started as somebody's house and became an arts space has a social gravity a newly opened wellness lounge has to spend years building. For an artist, a musician or anyone sober-curious in Little River, it functions as the default room rather than the alternative one.

The caveat that belongs on every kava listing applies here and should not be softened: kava is psychoactive and sedating, with documented case reports of liver injury, and kratom acts on opioid receptors and carries real dependence and withdrawal risk. Everything served is free of alcohol. That is a narrower claim than nothing served having an effect, and for anyone whose reason for avoiding alcohol is recovery from a substance-use disorder, the difference is the whole question.
