Kava Saia sits at 616 E Burnside Street, on the Buckman edge of the Central Eastside, and its headline fact is the opening hours: 11am to 1am, seven days a week, every day of the year. That matters more than it sounds. Portland has excellent zero-proof cocktail programmes inside ordinary bars, but those rooms still sell alcohol, and the alcohol-free alternatives mostly keep café hours. A fully alcohol-free room that is still open at midnight on a Tuesday, and open on the holidays when everything else shuts, fills a gap that is real for anyone whose hardest evenings are the late and unstructured ones.
The menu runs deeper than a single preparation. Alongside traditional kava there are kava sodas, kava shots, kava mocktails and clariteas, plus a range of herbal teas and kratom. The room itself is a mix of things — part tea house, part bar, with an art gallery hung on the walls, books to borrow and a pool table that is free to play — which gives an evening here somewhere to put your hands, rather than a table and a drink and nothing else to do.
Programming is the other half of it. Open mic nights, poetry readings, potlucks and holiday gatherings run through the calendar, and the reviews are unusually consistent about who turns up: people looking for somewhere to be sociable without alcohol, including a visible contingent who are sober or recently stopped drinking, in a space regulars describe as clean, welcoming and LGBTQ+-friendly. It is the sort of reputation a venue earns slowly and cannot advertise its way into.
Two things to know before going. Kava contains no alcohol but is psychoactive — a mild sedative that should not be combined with alcohol or with sedating medication, and that is worth planning your journey home around. Kratom, also served here, is a different substance again, with a more contested profile that includes physical dependence with regular use; it is a menu section rather than a technicality, and an alcohol-free room is not automatically a substance-free one. If you are avoiding intoxicants of every kind, the herbal teas are separate from both, and staff are used to being asked which is which.
