Canard is a French-inflected bar and bistro at 734 E Burnside St in Portland's Buckman neighborhood, opened in 2018 by acclaimed chef Gabriel Rucker as the casual, all-day sibling to his adjacent fine-dining flagship, Le Pigeon. Rucker is a two-time James Beard Award winner and a Food & Wine "Best New Chef," and Canard quickly became one of the city's most celebrated spots — named Portland Monthly's best restaurant of 2018 — known for playful French bar food like its foie gras dumplings and the Duck Stack.
What sets Canard apart for non-drinkers is a genuinely committed non-alcoholic program, shaped by the fact that Rucker has been sober since 2013 and is a vocal advocate for sobriety in the restaurant industry (he helped establish the Portland chapter of the recovery group Ben's Friends). Canard offers a full menu of zero-proof options well beyond an afterthought, including mocktails, non-alcoholic IPAs and alcohol-free sparkling wine, pouring NA spirits and beers from brands such as Seedlip (served with tonic) and Athletic Brewing. A standout zero-proof drink is the Paul Frank, a blend of cold brew coffee, caramelized banana, Anjou pear and toasted milk powder.
