115 Avenue C, New York, NY 10009
Kosmic Community Anti Bar & Coffee Shop opened in May 2024 at 115 Avenue C, in the former Mug & Cup space in the East Village, and the name is a genuine statement of method rather than a pun. It was founded by East Village resident James Lockwood with partners Tyler Garrett and Apostolos Filippas, and built explicitly as a judgment-free social space for people with any relationship to sobriety — which is a wider and more useful brief than "a bar for sober people".
The most interesting decision here is what they refused to do. The owners have said plainly that they are not big on mocktails. That runs against the entire grain of the category, where the default assumption is that a room without alcohol must offer elaborate imitations of cocktails to be taken seriously. Instead the bar pours a full coffee programme alongside house-made sodas, herbal teas, fruit presses and kava, with craft non-alcoholic beer from Mash Gang, Athletic Brewing and Go Brewing.
That choice is worth defending, because the mocktail-first model has a real weakness: an imitation invites comparison, and comparison is exactly what a lot of people trying not to drink would rather avoid. A well-made house soda or a properly brewed tea is not pretending to be anything. It is simply a good drink, ordered without subtext. Kava — the South Pacific root drink poured for its mild sedative effect — sits in the same tradition of drinks that are interesting in their own right; anyone unfamiliar with it should know it is psychoactive in a mild way rather than inert, and pace a first visit accordingly.
The room is fitted as a retro lounge, complete with a vintage phone booth, and opens onto a back garden. It programmes community events and live sessions, and it keeps hours that matter: open until 2am on Friday and Saturday. That is the specific window in which not drinking is hardest and the East Village's alternatives thinnest, and a room that is open, awake and free of alcohol at 1am on a Saturday is doing something few venues in Manhattan do at all.
