Dry January in New York: Where to Drink Alcohol-Free

Golden Ratio is a Clinton Hill cocktail bar from Redwood Hospitality where every drink on the menu has both a spirited and a non-alcoholic version, built around house-made distillates and hydrosols crafted from foraged and upcycled ingredients.

Bar Moga is a 1920s-era Japanese cocktail bar on West Houston Street, built around the Taisho-period idea of yōshoku — Western dishes absorbed into Japanese cooking — with jazz, shochu and Japanese whisky at its centre. It won its category at the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards for what the judges described as a narrative-driven, Japanese cocktail-inspired non-alcoholic menu: drinks built to tell the same story as the alcoholic list rather than to sit apart from it. It serves alcohol as well as the zero-proof list. Hours run 5pm to midnight, to 12:30am on Friday and Saturday, with a weekend lunch service from noon.

Caffe Dante is the Greenwich Village original at 79–81 MacDougal Street, named the World's Best Bar in 2019 and famous for its Negroni and Garibaldi programmes. Note that three separate Dante rooms share one website — this is the MacDougal Street original, not Dante West Village on Hudson Street or Dante Aperitivo on Bank Street. CORRECTION TO OUR EARLIER LISTING: we previously described a zero-proof menu called "Temperance" led by a signature "NOgroni". Neither appears anywhere on Dante's site or current menus, and we could not source either name; they have been removed. The real section is headed simply NON-ALCOHOLIC and runs five drinks: an Espresso Shakerato with orange juice and vanilla ($16), an NA Cosmojito with Dante cranberry, mint, lime and orange bitters ($14), a Dante Italian Spritz on Lyre's ($16), an NA Blood Orange Spritz with Seedlip Grove, raspberry and balsamic ($17), and a Forest Highball on Everleaf Forest with clementine and saffron ($15). It was shortlisted, not a winner, at NYC's Best Bars for NA 2025.

Sunken Harbor Club is an immersive tropical cocktail bar on the second floor above Gage & Tollner on Fulton Street, opened in October 2021 and led by Chief Cocktail Officer Garret Richard — one of the most respected tiki technicians working in the United States. It won its category at the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards, recognised for tiki-style non-alcoholic drinks, which is a harder trick than it sounds: tiki depends on rum's weight and funk, so building the same lushness without it demands real work with syrups, acids and spice rather than a swap from a bottle. The bar serves alcohol as well. It trades 5pm to 11pm, and to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The Penrose calls itself the Upper East Local, and it backs that up with something almost no neighbourhood gastropub bothers with: a properly built list of eleven named non-alcoholic cocktails, published alongside the alcoholic ones rather than buried. Express Yourself is its espresso martini, Garden Tonic its zero-proof G&T, Peach Fuzz a boozeless bellini, Good Vibrations a no-alcohol negroni sbagliato, and Sunday Kinda Love a virgin bloody mary; there is also Lyre's non-alcoholic prosecco by the glass, plus NA beer. It serves alcohol too — this is a full bar, not an alcohol-free room — but it opens at 11:30am and runs to 4am daily, which makes it the most usefully late NA list in upper Manhattan.

Bar Contra is a technically ambitious cocktail bar on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side, from chefs Jeremiah Stone and Fabian von Hauske-Valtierra (of the former Michelin-starred Contra and Wildair) with mixologist Dave Arnold. It was named a winner of the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards 2025 for its deeply experimental non-alcoholic menu, and its drink list carries a few low-ABV and no-ABV options alongside its $21 craft cocktails and creative small plates.

An acclaimed Lower East Side cocktail bar split into two spaces: the walk-in Free Range front room serving kegged "taptails" and small plates, and The Coop, a reservation-driven back room famous for conceptual, food-inspired culinary cocktails. The Coop menu offers mocktail versions of several signature drinks, making it a solid stop for non-drinkers.

A split-level Japanese-American cocktail bar in Greenwich Village from Masahiro "Masa" Urushido, a perennial fixture on The World's 50 Best Bars list. Its menu of highballs, boilermakers and signature cocktails runs alongside a named no-ABV drink, non-alcoholic beer, and classic highballs that can be made alcohol-free with Seedlip.

Sugar Monk is a speakeasy-inspired lounge on Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem, founded by mixologist, distiller and artist Ektoras Binikos, from Ikaria in Greece, with Montreal-born photographer and designer Simon Jutras. Its drinks are built on foraged and wild botanicals supplied for years by forager Tama Matsuoka Wong, worked into bitters, tinctures, infusions and syrups, and the bar distils its own non-alcoholic amaro and vermouth under its Atheras Spirits label. READ THE MENU CAREFULLY BEFORE ORDERING: its section headed "Follow the Gleams" is subtitled "Low ABV/Non-Alcoholic", and two of its five drinks contain real alcohol at printed strengths — the Ganesha at 19% ABV and the Strawberry Spritz at 25% ABV, both $18. The genuinely alcohol-free drinks in that section are the Butterfly Field ($16, and note it contains pasteurised egg white), the Ba-Lue Bolivar ($16) and a zero-proof Negroni Sbagliato ($16). A Faux Negroni, explicitly labelled non-alcoholic, is $12 during the daily 5–7pm happy hour. Shortlisted at NYC's Best Bars for NA 2025.

Superbueno is an award-winning Mexican-American cocktail bar in the East Village with a celebrated zero-proof menu that includes an alcohol-free version of its signature Mole Negroni.

A creative Alphabet City cocktail bar, opened November 2025, where non-alcoholic drinks are built in-house with the same rigor as the spirited menu rather than treated as an afterthought. The zero-proof builds favor unusual, savory and offbeat ingredients over the standard fruity mocktail.

Public Records is a plant-based restaurant, cocktail bar, and hi-fi music venue in Gowanus, Brooklyn, opened in April 2019 by musician Francis Harris, designer Shane Davis, and hospitality director Erik VanderWal. It occupies a 1910s building that served as the ASPCA's Brooklyn headquarters for decades, and the all-vegan kitchen nods to that history. The campus spans several spaces, including The Atrium restaurant-lounge, where the bar program runs alongside an extensive cocktail list. The Atrium menu carries a dedicated "Zero-Proof" section of fully built spirit-free cocktails rather than an afterthought mocktail or two. Current named options include the Palomar (NA mezcal, elderflower cordial, spiced grapefruit shrub, lemon balm, soda), Not For Rita (NA agave spirit, spiced grapefruit shrub, lime, agave, damiana), and Press For Time (coffee, cinnamon-lapsang-sorghum syrup, vanilla-coconut cream whip, reishi, orange), plus housemade sodas.

Clemente Bar opened in October 2024 on the second floor of chef Daniel Humm's three-Michelin-star Eleven Madison Park, in NoMad/Flatiron at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 24th Street. It is a collaboration with — and named for — Italian artist Francesco Clemente, whose original murals swirl through the room and around the back bar. The bar comprises a 38-seat Lounge serving à la carte food and drinks, plus a nine-seat Studio offering a five-course tasting with cocktail pairings. Like EMP, the food is fully plant-based. The beverage program, overseen by EMP's drinks team, includes a dedicated menu of "soft cocktails" and a fully non-alcoholic pairing option available with the Studio tasting menu. Named zero-proof drinks include the Proxy Fizz (Seedlip Garden, cucumber, green apple, amazake) and a non-alcoholic Kalimotxo. Clemente Bar entered North America's 50 Best Bars at No. 11 in 2025, winning the Best New Opening Award, and ranked No. 15 in 2026.

The Lobby Bar occupies the ground floor of the Hotel Chelsea, the most storied building in American bohemia, restored and reopened as a bar that is genuinely worth visiting rather than a lobby with a counter. It was shortlisted at the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards. Its practical advantage over almost everything else in this guide is time: 11am to 2am, every single day, so it works for a mid-afternoon meeting and a late night from the same room. Alcohol is served. Spirited Away, New York's deepest non-alcoholic bottle shop, is a five-minute walk away on Eighth Avenue, which makes this a natural pairing for an afternoon.

The Portrait Bar sits inside The Fifth Avenue Hotel in NoMad, a maximalist room hung with portraiture that reads as considered rather than merely lavish. It won its category at the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards, where the judges singled out an intimate maximalist setting paired with a confident non-alcoholic list — confident being the operative word, since hotel bars are where zero-proof menus most often collapse into a token pair of juices. It serves alcohol too. Hours are unusually generous for a room of this quality: 5pm to 1am through the week and to 2am on Friday and Saturday, seven days.

Bright Nights Social is an alcohol-free pop-up bar and events platform founded by Sam Bail, running sober dance parties, mixology classes and social gatherings at rotating venues across New York — there is no permanent location, and its own line is that all of NYC is its venue. It has been going since 2022 and has hosted more than 100 events. It was called Third Place Bar until January 2026, when Bail renamed it, writing that three years and nearly a hundred events in, Third Place Bar had grown into many things, just not an actual bricks-and-mortar bar. Her framing of the mission is precise: it is not about sobriety as an identity, but about creating a space where alcohol isn't the default. Events have included tea bars, bagel-making classes and full dance parties with DJs and a complete non-alcoholic bar. Bright Nights Social also presents the NYC's Best Bars for NA awards, which judge the city's non-alcoholic drinks programmes. Confirmed active: it is co-hosting a zero-proof mixer in Manhattan in late August 2026.
