Maya Moon Cacao Lounge is the North County outpost of Maya Moon Collective, opened in May 2025 inside GOODONYA, the long-running organic eatery on South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. The parent business — founder Kathryn Rogers's Normal Heights café, which bills itself as Southern California's first ceremonial-cacao café — built its reputation on treating cacao the way a coffee bar treats coffee or a wine bar treats wine: as something with origin, preparation method and tasting notes worth taking seriously, rather than as hot chocolate. This location brings that to a beach town whose social life otherwise runs on surf, coffee and natural wine.

The draw is a rotating set of signature herbal cacao blends, drinking-cacao tasting flights, adaptogenic drinks, handcrafted truffles and house honey marshmallows. The flight format is the thing worth travelling for, because it turns a drink into an experience with a beginning and an end — the closest structural equivalent a non-drinker gets to a wine flight, and a genuinely ritual-forward alternative to a bar. Ceremonial cacao is unprocessed cacao paste prepared as a drink, mildly stimulating through theobromine rather than intoxicating, and it contains no alcohol.

One honest caveat belongs on this listing, and it is the reason this venue is graded lower than the Normal Heights room. The host business, GOODONYA, also serves natural wine, prosecco and local beer alongside its own alcohol-free social tonic menu. So the dry experience here is the cacao programme, not the whole building — which is fine if you are comfortable sitting somewhere that serves alcohol to other tables, and worth knowing in advance if you are not. For anyone who specifically wants a room where nothing alcoholic is poured at all, the Normal Heights café and its Moon Flower evening lounge are the ones to choose.
