Atelier Manna

Atelier Manna is a brunch-only chef's workshop on the Leucadia stretch of North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, opened in April 2023 by the husband-and-wife team of Andrew and Larah Bachelier and awarded a Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Michelin Guide. Andrew Bachelier came from the Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie, and he runs the kitchen on a food-as-medicine philosophy that shows up in the sourcing and the plating rather than in any wellness posturing. The defining fact, and the reason this restaurant matters well beyond San Diego, is that it serves no alcohol at all — not a reduced list, not a token pair of options, none. For a Michelin-recognised restaurant to make that choice and then win a Bib Gourmand is one of the more meaningful data points anyone can point to about where this category is going.

What replaces the wine list is a rotating menu of vitality tonics: spirit-free drinks built with the same construction logic as bar cocktails, from the same produce the kitchen is already using. Zanzibar layers cold brew with red ginseng, cinnamon and tulsi. Veracruz works dragonfruit against hoja santa, toasted juniper and ginger — a genuinely herbal, resinous drink rather than a sweet one. Jasper and Goldenrod round out a list that changes with what is available. The critical point is that these are designed as the restaurant's actual beverage programme, not as accommodations, and they are priced and presented accordingly. San Diego Magazine's Troy Johnson put the achievement precisely: "Without the breakfast charms of Champagne, they have created one of the most ambitious zero-proof drink rosters in the city." Brunch is the hardest meal for a non-drinker to enjoy socially, because mimosas and bloody marys are so embedded in it; Atelier Manna is one of very few places anywhere that has simply removed the problem.
