Gather Coffee & Kava Bar occupies a Ray Street storefront in North Park, in the space that previously housed Mystic Water Kava Bar, and it is one of only a handful of places in San Diego where the entire menu is alcohol-free by design rather than by omission. The operating hours tell you what it is: doors at 2pm daily, running to 11pm at the start of the week, midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, and 1am on Friday and Saturday. That is a bar's schedule, not a cafe's, and the room is set up to match — dog-friendly, stocked with board games, comfortable enough to sit in for the couple of hours that kava actually asks of you. Two programs run in parallel: third-wave coffee pulled from beans roasted locally by Mostra Coffee, and noble kava sourced from sustainably grown crops in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Hawaii.

Kava deserves describing plainly, because the people most likely to seek out a bar like this are the people who most need to know what they are ordering. It is a psychoactive drink made from the ground root and stump of a South Pacific shrub, infused in water and drunk socially. It contains no alcohol whatsoever, and the bar's own framing is that it amplifies sociability and reduces everyday stress without most of alcohol's downsides — but it is mildly sedative and mildly intoxicating on its own terms, a distinction that matters if your recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically. Importantly, Gather is kava-only: no kratom is served, which separates it from a large share of American kava bars where the two sit on the same menu. The house guidance is to treat the visit as leisurely — one to two servings every twenty minutes across at least an hour — because kava exhibits reverse tolerance, meaning regular drinkers typically need less rather than more to feel it. Newcomers are pointed at the kava flight, and the staff's willingness to talk first-timers through what kava tastes like and how it feels is the single most consistent theme in the venue's reviews. In its own words: "We are an easy-going crew and we love newcomers!"
