Kava deserves describing plainly, because the people most likely to seek out a bar like this are the people who most need to know what they are ordering. It is a psychoactive drink made from the ground root and stump of a South Pacific shrub, infused in water and drunk socially. It contains no alcohol whatsoever, and the bar's own framing is that it amplifies sociability and reduces everyday stress without most of alcohol's downsides — but it is mildly sedative and mildly intoxicating on its own terms, a distinction that matters if your recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically. Importantly, Gather is kava-only: no kratom is served, which separates it from a large share of American kava bars where the two sit on the same menu.
