Revival at the Sawyer

Revival is the bar at the Kimpton Sawyer, the hotel embedded in Downtown Commons beside the Golden 1 Center, and its alcohol-free offering takes an unusual form: a recurring named menu called Sober Sundays, with four drinks of its own — Italian Stallion, Little Rizz, Fleur de Lis and the Vezenkov Sour.

That structure is worth thinking about. A permanent mocktail or two on the main list is useful but passive; it waits for a non-drinker to find it. A named night does something different — it advertises, it recurs, and it gives people a reason to turn up specifically. For anyone who has stopped drinking, the loss is rarely the alcohol itself; it is the occasion, the standing plan, the thing in the diary. A bar that creates one is addressing the actual problem.

The Vezenkov Sour is named for Sasha Vezenkov of the Sacramento Kings, which locates the whole exercise precisely: this is a hotel bar fifty yards from the arena, and its Sunday crowd includes people heading to or from a game. Sport and drinking are heavily bundled in American culture, and a good zero-proof drink named after a player is a small, effective way of unbundling them.

The hours run 4pm to 10pm early in the week and to midnight Thursday through Saturday. Being inside a Kimpton means it is comfortable for a non-drinker in the way hotel bars often are — nobody is tracking rounds, and there is no pressure to keep pace. Worth confirming that Sober Sundays is still running when you plan, since named menus rotate more than permanent ones.

The location does something else useful. Downtown Commons is a compact district, and Revival sits within a few minutes' walk of Dive Bar, Darling Aviary and Juju — four venues with documented alcohol-free drinks inside a small radius. For a visitor staying downtown, or a group forming a plan on the night, that density is the thing that makes not drinking easy rather than effortful. Sacramento is not a large city by American standards, and its centre being walkable turns a handful of good venues into something closer to a scene.
