2174 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80210

Royal Kumete Kava Lounge sits at 2174 South Broadway, a few blocks north of Evans Avenue, on the stretch of the Broadway corridor that runs to tattoo parlours, vintage storefronts and dive bars. It is Polynesian owned and operated, and that is the first thing the business says about itself — ahead of the drinks, ahead of the hours. In a category where most American kava bars present kava as a wellness product or an alcohol substitute, a room run by people from the culture the drink comes from, framing it as the traditional serving of kava with a modern twist, is a genuinely different proposition.

The name carries the point. A kumete is the carved wooden bowl in which kava is prepared and from which it is shared, and across Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu the bowl is the social unit — you sit around it, you are served in turn, you stay for as long as the bowl lasts. The venue's own material builds on the legend of Kava'onau, one of the Tongan origin stories for the plant. The room is fitted to match: softer lighting, earthy herbal aromas, and an emphasis on relaxation rather than intoxication.

Operationally it is an evening lounge, not a daytime café. It opens at 5pm and trades late into the night, which puts it in direct competition with the South Broadway bars around it rather than with the coffee shops. Kava is the drink — the ground root of a South Pacific shrub, infused in water, alcohol-free, earthy and numbing on the lips, mildly sedative, and drunk socially. No alcohol is served at any point.

A practical note before you go. Royal Kumete's published hours are inconsistent across sources — Google currently shows only a Monday evening service, while the venue's own listings describe a Monday-through-Saturday evening operation from 5pm — and its website is a single-page placeholder rather than a full site. This is a small, owner-run room rather than a chain with a marketing department, and the sensible move is to call ahead on (720) 709-0160 before making a trip across the city. What is not in doubt is the nature of the place: it is a kava lounge, it is Polynesian-run, it serves no alcohol, and it is the only one of its kind on this side of Denver.
