The name carries the point. A kumete is the carved wooden bowl in which kava is prepared and from which it is shared, and across Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu the bowl is the social unit — you sit around it, you are served in turn, you stay for as long as the bowl lasts. The venue's own material builds on the legend of Kava'onau, one of the Tongan origin stories for the plant. The room is fitted to match: softer lighting, earthy herbal aromas, and an emphasis on relaxation rather than intoxication.

Operationally it is an evening lounge, not a daytime café. It opens at 5pm and trades late into the night, which puts it in direct competition with the South Broadway bars around it rather than with the coffee shops.
