The Chill Room sits in a suite on East Broadway Road in Tempe, and its claim on this directory rests less on any single drink than on how much it programmes. The drinks list is what you would expect of a serious kava room — spirit-free cocktails, traditional kava, Fijian extract, botanical root teas, herbal teas and coffee, served from early afternoon until late. The calendar is the part that is unusual: open mic nights, live music, DJs, movie nights, trivia and poker, running weekly rather than as occasional specials.

That distinction is the whole argument. The hardest thing about not drinking is rarely the drink itself; it is that the social infrastructure of an evening — the reason to leave the house, the thing that happens between 8pm and midnight — is almost entirely built around bars. A venue that serves excellent alcohol-free drinks but offers nothing to do is competing with someone's sofa, and usually loses. A venue with a Tuesday trivia night and a Thursday open mic is competing with a pub, and can win. The Chill Room is built on the second model, and in the East Valley — where the alternative is largely ASU-adjacent drinking — that fills a real gap.

Hours suit the purpose: daily from 2pm, to midnight Sunday through Thursday and to 2am on Friday and Saturday, which means it is genuinely available at the hours when the temptation to go to a bar is highest rather than closing at nine like a cafe.

One caveat to carry in. Kava is mildly psychoactive and sedating, and kratom — served here as at most Arizona kava bars — acts on opioid receptors with documented dependence and withdrawal risk. Everything poured is alcohol-free, and none of it is inert. For someone in recovery that distinction is worth making deliberately rather than discovering at the bar.
