9822 N 7th St #4, Phoenix, AZ 85020
Twisted Totem trades from noon to 2am, seven days a week, in a unit on North 7th Street in north Phoenix, under a line that removes any ambiguity about what it is: zero alcohol, all vibes. Its own description is better than anything written about it — a watering hole with no bar-tab hangover. That is precisely the gap the kava format fills, and this room fills it more literally than most.
The fit-out is built for occupying rather than passing through: custom wall art, comfortable seating, big TVs and a couple of games consoles. The venue calls itself a friend-and-family spot and programmes events through the calendar. What that produces is a room where people arrive without a plan and stay for a few hours, which is the specific social function alcohol usually performs and the hardest one to replace.
The kava is graded and properly presented. House Kava and Premium Kava are offered across several sizes, and the signature build is the Island Warrior. Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in alcohol's sense. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, meaning regular drinkers typically need less rather than more to feel it, so a first visit rewards a slow pace across an hour or two.
Phoenix now carries a real spread of these rooms — Kawana on Thomas Road, Kavasutra on Thunderbird, Lighthouse over in Tempe, Meraki on Bell Road and the two Mad Hatter sites in Ahwatukee and Mesa — and Twisted Totem's contribution is the latest close in the group and the most straightforwardly bar-like atmosphere.
The caution here is unusually easy to act on, because the menu names the drinks rather than hiding them behind categories. **Crushed Leaf Tea, Jamaica, Unkie Palmer and the house Josh Juice are kratom drinks, not kava.** Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, and its principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a genuine withdrawal syndrome, several US states ban it outright, and its concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine derivatives are the subject of active federal scheduling. Kava carries no comparable dependence profile, and a great many people come to kava bars precisely because of that difference. Here, the practical advice is simple: order the House Kava, the Premium Kava or the Island Warrior and you are drinking kava; anything from the tea side of the board is a different proposition, and the staff will confirm which is which.
