What Dry January is, and what it is like in Chicago

Dry January began in 2013 as a public-health campaign by Alcohol Change UK, a British charity, after a volunteer trained for a half-marathon by giving up drink for a month. It has since become the largest alcohol-free event in the world, and the reason most bars now keep a zero-proof list at all: a month of genuine demand every January made non-alcoholic drinks worth stocking year-round.

January is the easy month to do this and the hard month to enjoy it. Everyone is out, nobody minds you ordering something soft, and the bars have their new menus in — but the weather is against you and the venues that shine are the warm ones: hotel bars, taprooms with a kitchen, bottle shops with seating. The places below skew that way, and several run dedicated Dry January menus or tastings that only exist in this month.

The practical warning for January is that a zero-proof list you read about in a magazine may not survive the month. Bars build these menus for the January rush, and a fair number quietly retire them in February when the traffic drops — which is why every venue here is checked against the bar's own current menu rather than copied from a seasonal round-up. If you are planning a big night, ring ahead: the alcohol-free menu is usually the first thing cut when a kitchen gets slammed, and the staff who know how to make the drinks are not always on the Friday rota.

One more thing worth knowing if this is your first January off: the fourth week is the one that catches people out, not the first. The novelty has worn off, the social invitations have not stopped, and the easiest failure is simply having nowhere to go. That is the argument for finding two or three places early in the month that you actually like being in — a room where the non-alcoholic order is normal rather than negotiated is worth more in week four than any single drink.

Cafe
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

The menu is split into traditional Yemeni drinks, iced refreshers, house signatures and espresso classics: jubani, qishr, mofawer, adeni tea and sana'ani coffee sit alongside a Yemeni latte, a date matcha latte and the Sand Dune latte. Arwa's rooms are designed for sitting and staying, several of them built around jelsa rooms for traditional floor seating. It keeps late hours by cafe standards, running to 10pm most nights and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. No alcohol is served.

It is the eleventh location of a chain that started in Dearborn, Michigan in 2022 and has since expanded through Ohio, Texas and now Chicago, and it imports its coffee beans and tea directly from Yemen. The menu is unusually deep on the traditional side for a US cafe, listing Adeni tea, mufawar, sana'ani, jubani, rad'ai and qishr alongside Saudi and Turkish coffee, an espresso list, non-caffeinated refreshers and a pastry case of sabaya, honeycomb and basbousa. There is no alcohol on the menu at all.

Bar None

West Loop

Cocktail Bar
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·9 NA brands

Bar None is a zero-proof evening bar in Chicago's West Loop, running Friday to Sunday from 5pm to 11pm inside Froth, the coffee cafe in the lobby of The Duncan at 1515 W Monroe St. It launched on 28 February 2026 from Heritage Hospitality Group, the team behind Froth, with beverage director Luke Nevin-Gattle (previously Bunker and Larry's). Every cocktail is genuinely alcohol-free, built on real NA spirits at $13 — a St. Agrestis Phony Negroni, an espresso martini with Ritual rum alternative and Pathfinder, Good Vibrations with Ritual gin alternative and Giffard elderflower, a spicy margarita with Ritual agave and Lyre's Italian orange, and a Gold Rush — alongside nine non-alcoholic beers and ciders at $6 and Leitz Eins Zwei Zero wines at $9. IMPORTANT: the venue brands itself a THC-integrated sober lounge. Any cocktail can be upgraded with a 2.5mg THC microdose for $4, and it sells 5mg THC seltzers at $9. The alcohol-free drinks stand on their own, but anyone avoiding all intoxicants should order without the upgrade and skip the seltzers.

Queen Yemeni Coffee is an alcohol-free Yemeni coffeehouse that opened in May 2026 in the ground floor of the historic Bridgeview Bank building at Lawrence Avenue and Broadway in Uptown, taking over a space that had been a Starbucks. It is the second location of a small operation that started in suburban Libertyville, and it is run as a late-night room: doors open at 5am and stay open until midnight on weeknights and 1am on Friday and Saturday. The name, logo and wall mural all reference the Queen of Sheba, ruler of Yemen and Ethiopia, and the beans are sourced from Yemen. The menu covers traditional milk and cardamom-spiced coffees at $5-$6, spiced signature lattes, teas, smoothies, breakfast plates and a dessert case. No alcohol is served.

Eli Tea Bar

Andersonville

Cafe
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Eli Tea Bar is an explicitly alcohol-free "sober bar" in Andersonville, opened in November 2021 by founder Elias "Eli" Majid, who launched the original Eli Tea in Birmingham, Michigan in 2012 and attended Loyola University in Chicago. Occupying the former True North cafe space at 5507 N Clark St, it pours more than 100 loose-leaf teas, kombucha on tap, house bubble/boba tea (made with fresh milk, boiled tea, and tapioca pearls), chai, tea lattes, and tea-based mocktails such as the kombucha-nada. Majid describes the concept as sitting "between a wine bar and coffee shop," built to give LGBTQ+ and sober-curious Chicagoans a late-night place to gather without alcohol. Evenings bring open mics, book clubs, craft nights, trivia, drag bingo, and DJ sets. By late 2024 the shop was outpacing its sales goals and planning a line of canned non-alcoholic tonics.

Cafe

Qamaria Yemeni Coffee is a large, fully alcohol-free Yemeni coffeehouse on the stretch of North Kedzie Avenue in Albany Park that has become Chicago's densest cluster of Middle Eastern cafes. It is the Chicago outpost of Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co., founded by Yemeni entrepreneurs Hatem and Munif with the stated mission of sharing Yemeni-sourced coffee with the world, and it keeps the late hours that define the category: open until midnight most nights and until 1am on Friday and Saturday. The room is built for sitting rather than grabbing and going, with a deep floor of tables a block north of the CTA Brown Line's Kedzie stop. The menu runs on light-roast Yemeni coffee, spiced milk drinks, signature lattes and a case of Middle Eastern pastries and cakes. No alcohol is served at any hour.

In Good Spirits

West Town

Bottle Shop
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·2 NA brands

In Good Spirits is a dedicated non-alcoholic bottle shop and community space in Chicago's West Town, opened on July 15, 2023 by couple Adriana Gaspar and Hector Diaz. The two ran sober pop-ups around the city before securing a permanent storefront; both came to the alcohol-free life through personal experience — Gaspar stopped drinking after losing her father to COVID-19, and Diaz cut back following a kidney cancer diagnosis. The shelves carry zero-proof beer, wine, spirits, aperitifs, functional and hemp drinks, and RTDs to take away, with local delivery and online pick-up ordering. This is a shop rather than a bar — drinks are sold to go, not poured to sit with. Beyond retail it works as a third space, and the events calendar is the reason to plan a visit: sober supper clubs with local restaurants, zero-proof cocktail workshops, 'POUring' brand tastings with producers such as Copenhagen Sparkling Tea Co. and Kolonne Null, book swaps, artist showcases, sound meditations, and Lotería nights. It is Chicago's longest-running non-alcoholic shop.

Prazbar

West Town

Wine Bar
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — this listing has changed. Prāzbar is a faith-based, fully non-alcoholic wine project founded by Quenjana Adams, which began as pop-ups in Bronzeville and West Town in late 2021 and opened a permanent shop, "2048", at 2048 W Chicago Ave in September 2023, named for its address. As of August 2026 we cannot confirm that shop is still trading: all three of its own web properties are dead (2048chi.com no longer resolves, and both of its Square storefronts return 404), prazbar.com now forwards to a ticket page for a one-off fashion event at a different venue, and no opening hours have been publishable since 2023. What is definitely active is the brand. Adams posts regularly, and in June 2026 announced that Prāzbar is building a permanent music venue for faith-genre live music in Chicago — writing that the team has spent several years producing live faith and music events in the city and that "today, we are building that home." Treat Prāzbar for now as an alcohol-free events producer with a venue in development. The wines it pours are all between 0% and 0.5% ABV.

Kumiko

West Loop

Cocktail Bar
NA Program Strength: 4 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Kumiko is a Japanese dining bar in Chicago's West Loop, opened in 2018 by bartender and restaurateur Julia Momosé, who also leads it as creative director and beverage visionary. Named for the Japanese kumiko woodworking technique reflected in its design, the venue treats food and drink with equal reverence. Its alcohol-free program is a genuine cornerstone: Momosé created a line of zero-proof drinks she calls "Spiritfrees," built from ingredients like shiso-pickled umé, sanshō, yarrow flower, sweet osmanthus, and Japanese seven spice rather than NA spirit brands. Spiritfree is offered both à la carte and as one of four formal tasting-menu pairings, alongside light cocktails, stirred cocktails, and sake. Kumiko won the 2025 James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar and was named World's Best Bar at the 2025 Spirited Awards, and it ranked among North America's 50 Best Bars. Reservations recommended; guests 18 and older.

Its non-alcoholic list is a full section headed "Spirit Free Cocktails", six drinks at a flat $12, each built on a real zero-proof base rather than juice: Bright & Refreshing (AMASS Riverine, chamomile, lemon, lovage, NA prosecco), Herbal & Citrus (Seedlip Garden, basil, yuzu, ginger), Juicy (Seedlip Grove, pineapple, smoked morita pepper, lime), All Barq's No Bite (St. Agrestis Amaro Falso, vanilla bean foam), Italian Spritz (Lyre's orange, NA prosecco, bubbles) and Velvety & Smooth (Lyre's Amaretti, almond orgeat, lemon, lime, egg white — note the egg white is not vegan). The California Clipper is Humboldt Park's longest-standing neighborhood bar, established in 1937 in a building that has stood at California and Augusta since 1912, and it carries one of the deepest non-alcoholic lists of any old-line Chicago tavern. The drink menu keeps a standing Non-Alcoholic section rather than a token substitution: two built zero-proof cocktails - the Last Call N/A with Seedlip Notas de Agave, white peach and lemon, and the Choomjito N/A - plus bottled Lyre's Prosecco, Amalfi Spritz and gin and tonic, a St Agrestis Phony Negroni, Athletic Brewing hazy IPA, Old Mil N/A lager and yerba mate. Note that the Choomjito and the Choom soda contain THC and the Chelsea B soda contains CBD; the rest of the list is free of both.

Bokeh is a cosy neighbourhood cocktail bar in Albany Park, two blocks north of the Kedzie Brown Line stop, opened in 2019 by a hospitality veteran and former professional photographer who built the room around a photography theme — bokeh being the name for the soft out-of-focus light behind a subject. It was nominated for Neighbourhood Bar of the Year in the Chicago Tribune's 2025 Readers' Choice food awards. Its menu carries a printed "Alcohol-Free Cocktails" section of four drinks at $11, all built from house syrups, jams and fresh juice rather than bought-in zero-proof spirits: Watermelon Man (watermelon juice, mint syrup, lemon), Shinjuku Sweetheart (yuzu, soursop, honey), Echo Mist (chicory syrup, mulberry jam, soda, lemon), and Hi-Potion (lime, lemon, salt, mint), a like-for-like alcohol-free build of the bar's own gin-and-vodka cocktail of the same name. A Deschutes Kernza non-alcoholic lager is $7, and food runs vegetarian-leaning snacks and paninis. The list rotates seasonally.

Alongside its spirited menu, the venue maintains a permanent "Zero Proof Cocktails" section rather than a one-off list — a commitment Saxon highlights as core to the program. Named non-alcoholic builds include Clearly Cultured (with Seedlip Grove), Understory (Heywell lime adaptogen soda), Fresh Cut Grass (dandelion honey, grasshopper syrup, liquid chlorophyll, lime), and Soda Pop (orgeat, oat milk, coconut soda, orange flower and rose water). A Happy Hour zero-proof option, Zeal Without the Rest, uses the Crodino NA aperitif. In January 2025 the venue hosted Chicago's Spirit-Free Cocktail Fest, pouring eight zero-proof drinks.

Kasama is the Filipino bakery and two-Michelin-starred tasting-menu restaurant on the corner of Winchester and Augusta in Ukrainian Village, a counter-service pastry case by day and a reservation-only dining room at night. Its non-alcoholic offering is structured, not incidental: the evening tasting menu is $325, the beverage pairing $195, and a full non-alcoholic pairing is listed at $95, so a table can be split between drinkers and non-drinkers without anyone dropping out of the format. Resy's guide to Chicago's zero-proof cocktails documented the alcohol-free drinks the kitchen has served alongside the tasting menu, including a yuzu highball, the clarified-watermelon Beekeeper and a Toddy-mansi built on genmaicha tea and calamansi juice. The restaurant also holds a 2023 James Beard Award.

Its non-alcoholic credentials are unusually deep for a brewery: Pilot Project is the U.S. brewing and distribution partner for Mash Gang, the London NA-beer brand founded by Jordan Childs and James Loveday in 2020. Pilot Project brews Mash Gang's lineup stateside and pours it on tap here, including Journey Juice (a Tajín-spiked mango IPA at 0.5% ABV) and Stoop Lite (a light, chili-and-Szechuan-tinged lager). The rotating Mash Gang range also features Chug (hazy IPA), Glug (cerveza), and the seasonal Lesser Evil (chocolate-cherry stout). Local coffee and tea round out the zero-proof options.

Bar Esmé is the à la carte bar adjoining Esmé, the one-Michelin-star Lincoln Park restaurant opened in August 2021 by chef Jenner Tomaska and his partner Katrina Bravo. Where the flagship serves a tasting menu built around rotating collaborations with artists, the bar is a smaller, more casual route into the same kitchen without committing to the full format. Drinks are led by beverage director Stevan Miller, who also oversees Esmé and the group's French brasserie Petite Edith, and whose stated approach is the reverse of the usual order: non-alcoholic cocktails, he told Third Coast Review in 2026, are something he thinks of before every other part of the menu. A current zero-proof example is Apple Island — apple with habanero and agave, force-carbonated so it lands with the bite of a hard soda. Note that the bar does not publish a working drinks list online, so the rotating menu is best read on arrival, and any zero-proof drinks named in pre-2026 coverage predate the current beverage team.
