Machine Cocktail Bar

Machine Cocktail Bar opened in May 2025 at 213 W Institute Place, a short block off Wells Street on the northern edge of River North, and built its reputation on presentation. Drinks arrive in custom vessels, under cages that have to be broken with a hammer, or with their own dispensers; the bar's own description of the Bee's Pajamas, for instance, has it landing with a honeycomb dispenser attached. That approach is applied without discrimination to the alcohol-free list, which is the reason the bar reads differently to most cocktail rooms with a token mocktail: a non-drinker at Machine gets the same theater as the table next to them.

The zero-proof menu runs to three drinks. Breakfast in Bed is the most substantial, a $15 build on Seedlip Spice with French toast syrup, pineapple juice, lime juice and a splash of soda that lands sweet and warm rather than thin. Judgement Free Zone, at $13, is fruit-driven and hot - watermelon, mango and passion fruit cut with habanero and lime juice. Pretty Peas is the one the press has fixed on: honeysuckle, sugar snap peas, lime juice and soda, delicate and floral, served hanging in a glass globe that Block Club Chicago compared to an air plant. Block Club named the bar as the third stop on its January 2026 sober drink crawl through Albany Park and River North, noting that the room makes a production of spirit-free and spirit-forward drinks alike. The bar is open Wednesday and Thursday until midnight and Friday and Saturday until 2am, and is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The bar posts its zero-proof drinks on its own channels alongside the full-proof ones rather than treating them as an afterthought, and Pretty Peas in particular has been used as the front of house image for the whole menu. For a directory like this one the useful signal is the ratio: three of the drinks on a seasonal menu are alcohol-free and each is given a distinct serve, which is a materially different proposition from a bar that will shake a citrus-and-soda on request.
