Kava Collective is a fully alcohol-free kava lounge, tea house, and café in San Diego's University Heights, formerly known as Rooted Kava Bar. Polite Provisions is a craft cocktail bar that opened in 2013 from San Diego hospitality group CH Projects, set in a 1920s apothecary-style room with a long marble bar near the North Park–Normal Heights border. Gather Coffee & Kava Bar
North Park
Gather Coffee & Kava Bar is a fully alcohol-free kava bar and third-wave coffee house on Ray Street in North Park, San Diego, open from 2pm until late every night of the week. It runs two programs side by side: espresso and cold brew pulled from locally roasted Mostra Coffee beans, and noble kava sourced from sustainably grown crops in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Hawaii. Kava is a psychoactive root drink from the South Pacific, prepared as a water infusion and drunk socially in place of alcohol — it contains no alcohol, but it is mildly sedative in its own right, which matters if your recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically. Good News Bar is San Diego's first dedicated 100% alcohol-free bar, opened in Hillcrest in mid-July 2025 with an integrated non-alcoholic bottle shop. The concept was created by married former bartenders Kaylee and Crystal Clark, who left drinking behind in recovery; since August 2025 the bar has been operated by its majority owner, Ality Richardson. It is named after Mac Miller's song "Good News" and frames itself around raising awareness of addiction and mental health.
