Kava Collective is a fully alcohol-free kava lounge, tea house, and café in San Diego's University Heights, formerly known as Rooted Kava Bar. It bills itself as Southern California's premier kava destination and one of the only bars in the country still making kava in the traditional South-Pacific fashion, brewing small batches with strains sourced from Fiji and serving them in shells, quads, or the half-gallon "Otter" and gallon "Whale" sharing bowls poured from a traditional tanoa. Polite Provisions is a craft cocktail bar that opened in 2013 from San Diego hospitality group CH Projects, set in a 1920s apothecary-style room with a long marble bar near the North Park–Normal Heights border. After a closure tied to a liquor-license suspension, it reopened in early 2025 with a reworked menu organized into five sections — including a dedicated "Sans Alcohol" list — under beverage director Alicia Perry. Realm of the 52 Remedies is a hidden cocktail bar in the Convoy District, themed on an ancient Chinese medical text and reached through an apothecary front. Its signature cocktails are twenty dollars, and every one of them is printed with the same line: available spirit free at fifteen. That makes the whole seasonal list — drinks such as the Sunomono, the Je Ju and Softly Spoken — orderable without alcohol, rather than a separate short section. The bar does not publish a separate ingredient list for those versions, so what arrives is its own rebuild of the drink without the spirit, at a five-dollar discount — worth asking which of the current list the bartenders think survives the swap best. The bar trades nightly from five, to midnight in the week and half past one on Friday and Saturday, and the room is small enough that a reservation is the safer plan.

North Park
Gather Coffee & Kava Bar is a fully alcohol-free kava bar and third-wave coffee house on Ray Street in North Park, San Diego, open from 2pm until late every night of the week. It runs two programs side by side: espresso and cold brew pulled from locally roasted Mostra Coffee beans, and noble kava sourced from sustainably grown crops in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Hawaii. Kava is a psychoactive root drink from the South Pacific, prepared as a water infusion and drunk socially in place of alcohol — it contains no alcohol, but it is mildly sedative in its own right, which matters if your recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically. Gather serves kava only, with no kratom on the menu, which is a meaningful distinction in a category where the two are often poured side by side. Mothership is a sci-fi tiki cocktail bar and fully plant-based restaurant in South Park, opened in August 2022 by the team behind the vegan restaurant Kindred. The immersive, crash-landed-spaceship interior won an Orchid Award, and while the rum-forward tiki list is the headline, the bar also runs a genuine, fully built-out zero-proof program: its menu carries a dedicated "Beverages" section where every drink is labeled zero-proof. And its hours have to run past midnight on at least one night, which is what makes this a nightlife page rather than a second copy of the sober bars list: at that cut a restaurant with a good zero-proof menu drops out, and the bars, lounges, kava bars and late coffeehouses remain.
“No alcohol served” is written on a card only when the venue's own verified description says so — never inferred from a rating or a name.
