Kava Collective occupies a University Heights storefront on University Avenue and is, by its own account and by most local reckoning, Southern California's premier kava destination. It trades today under a name it took after operating as Rooted Kava Bar, and it is fully alcohol-free — a lounge, tea house and café in one room, open to 1am on weeknights and 2am at weekends, which is a genuine bar schedule rather than a café one. What sets it apart from most American kava bars is the preparation. It is one of the few rooms left in the country still making kava in the traditional South Pacific fashion, brewing small batches quart by quart rather than reconstituting instant powder, and it works across strains from Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Hawaii, Samoa and Papua New Guinea rather than pouring a single house blend.
The service formats follow the tradition too. Kava comes by the shell or the quad, and for groups there are the half-gallon "Otter" and gallon "Whale" sharing bowls, poured from a traditional tanoa — the carved wooden bowl that anchors a kava circle across the Pacific. Around that sits a wider non-alcoholic list: kombucha, espresso and matcha lattes, and house builds including the Fake ID, an adaptogen-infused kava drink, plus Java Kava, Afterglow and Antidote. The room programmes heavily, with live music, art shows, book signings, yoga and bingo nights, which is what turns a kava bar from a place you try once into one you belong to. Kava deserves plain description for readers in recovery: it is the ground root of a South Pacific shrub steeped in water, containing no alcohol whatsoever and drunk socially across the Pacific for roughly three thousand years — but it is genuinely relaxing and mildly intoxicating in its own right, which matters if what you are avoiding is intoxication generally rather than alcohol specifically.
