Kindred

Kindred has been on 30th Street in South Park since 2015, and it is the rare bar whose own description of itself is accurate: equal parts evil lair and Victorian cocktail salon. It is entirely vegan, the soundtrack is death metal, the ceiling is covered in ornate gothic detail, and VegNews voted it the best vegan bar in the United States. It is also a Tales of the Cocktail honoree, which is the part that matters for the drinks — this is a serious cocktail bar wearing an unserious costume. The same team went on to open Mothership, the sci-fi tiki bar a few blocks away, so the two together give South Park an unusual concentration of good zero-proof drinking.

The non-alcoholic list is a standing Zero-Proof menu that the team has said it treats "just as intentional and special as any other part of the menu," and the builds bear that out across a genuinely wide range of registers. The Kiss of Steel is essentially a dessert-adjacent coffee drink — cold brew, oat milk, cinnamon and coconut with an orange twist. The Zombie Prescription is built on a pineapple-turmeric shrub with grapefruit, lemon, cinnamon, ginger and agave, which puts real acid and heat into the glass rather than sugar. The Miracle Cure is the tropical-goth showpiece, combining pineapple, lime, coconut and passionfruit with Thai basil, lemongrass and charcoal, and there is a Phony Negroni for anyone who wants the bitter aperitif register covered. Yelp placed Kindred among its top twenty-five mocktail spots in the country. For a non-drinker who is also vegan, this is one of the very few bars anywhere where every single thing on both menus is available to you — which is a rarer experience than it should be.
