3115 SE Division St, Portland, OR 97202

Bula Kava House opened on 22 March 2011 on SE Division Street and passed fifteen years in 2026, which makes it one of the oldest kava bars in the United States and older than most of the American kava scene. Owner Judd Rench's account of why is still at the top of the site and has not needed updating: kava makes a safe alternative to alcohol and other intoxicants, and he figured a Pacific Northwest kava bar would be a good place to come and socialise, or to use something that has been used medicinally to treat pain, insomnia and anxiety for thousands of years. Willamette Week's verdict from the early days remains the most honest introduction anyone has written: kava tastes like dirt, that is not figurative language, and it is not a reason to pass on Bula — because kava promotes socialisation and relaxation, and those traits are reflected in the room's warm feel. It opens at noon and runs to midnight, 1am at weekends.

The practical thing to know is that the core product is not published online. Kava varieties change daily and are written on a blackboard, so if you want a traditional shell you will have to see what is on and ask the price in person. What is printed covers everything around it, and it is a genuinely broad daytime menu: kava shots at $3.50 for two ounces, or a flight of four for $12 — The Glow Up, Dragonfuel, Coconut Kiss and Guava Kava — which is the sensible way in for a first visit. Then smoothies from $8.25 to $9, built on oat milk or coconut water with things like bee pollen, cacao nibs, almond butter and dates; cold-pressed juices from $6 to $9; açaí and yogurt bowls from $10 to $16; and four $3 wellness shots. On the botanical audit: we checked the printed menu, the full online catalogue and every page we could reach, and found no kratom under any name, no kanna, no blue lotus and no THC. CBD appears only as a $2 tincture you can add to a smoothie or juice. That is a cleaner shelf than most American kava bars. What is missing is any published safety information — no dosage guidance, no age policy, no pregnancy or driving warning appears anywhere current. Kava is psychoactive; ask the staff, who have been doing this for fifteen years.
