Canary Club

Shelby Park is a small, dense neighbourhood south-east of downtown that has become one of Louisville's more interesting drinking districts, and Canary Club is at the centre of it: a natural wine bar built inside a dive-bar frame, 100 per cent women-owned by Sarah Height and Chelsea Moore, who also run the sister shop The Breeze immediately next door. The wine list is the specialism — low-intervention bottles from small producers, sold by the glass in a room with late hours and a kitchen that runs until 1am every night — but the reason the bar belongs in a non-alcoholic guide is that it has thought about the other side of the list as deliberately as the wine.

The named zero-proof drinks are properly built. The Wild Rose Spritz uses Figlia Fiore, a botanical non-alcoholic aperitivo, against orange, lemon and simple syrup; the Maleficent runs NKD LDY — a de-alcoholised gin — through pomegranate, lime, ginger and a house grenadine. Dry January coverage has also singled out the bar's non-alcoholic Old Fashioned, described as the best riff on one you will find locally, and a fan-favourite Italian Pony, both around $9, alongside stocked non-alcoholic beer and wine. Most tellingly, Monday is an all-day happy hour that includes half-price non-alcoholic drinks as a standing weekly feature — a bar putting its own margin behind the category rather than charging cocktail prices for juice.

The programming makes it easy to spend an evening here without drinking: free live jazz every Tuesday from 8pm, and rotating food pop-ups through the week — Pacaya on Thursdays, Poco on Fridays, a bagel spread on Saturday mornings. Hours run genuinely late, to 1am most nights and 2am on Friday and Saturday, which matters because most of Louisville's better zero-proof lists sit in restaurants that close at 10pm. Pair it with The Breeze next door for bottles to take home.
