Louisville has never had an alcohol-free bar. In a city whose identity, export and tourism industry are all bourbon, that absence is the defining fact of its non-alcoholic scene — and it is not for want of demand, because Louisville also produced one of the country's most successful non-alcoholic spirits. Spiritless was founded here by three mothers who wanted their evenings without losing their mornings; its Kentucky 74, a reverse-distilled bourbon alternative, took Best Non-Alcoholic Spirit at the L.A. Spirits Awards and now turns up behind bars across the metro. So the zero-proof depth here lives inside ordinary rooms rather than dedicated ones. Barrel Bar & Grill pours a Zero Proof Old Fashioned on Kentucky 74 in the middle of Whiskey Row; Proof on Main at the 21c Museum Hotel carries the full Lyre's range plus Kentucky 74, Jalisco 55 and NKD LDY and makes its own ginger ale and tonic, so anything on its list can be built without alcohol; Volare in Clifton stirs Spiritless Manhattans; and The Pine Room out at Harrods Creek keeps both Spiritless expressions. bar Vetti in NuLu builds the city's most technically serious zero-proof drink, an N.A.-Groni on Ritual with Martini & Rossi Floreale and Vibrante. Shelby Park is the neighbourhood to aim for: Canary Club, Louisville's women-owned natural wine bar, runs half-price non-alcoholic drinks every Monday and pours a Wild Rose Spritz on Figlia Fiore, with the owners' sister shop The Breeze next door stocking alcohol-free bottles including a non-alcoholic Kentucky bourbon — the closest the city comes to a zero-proof bottle shop. The Merryweather in Schnitzelburg prints a full alcohol-free menu each January, and Planet of the Tapes will make any cocktail on its list as a mocktail for a flat $5. The two fully alcohol-free rooms are Cave Valley Kava, the South End kava lounge and all-ages music venue that is the nearest thing to a sober bar Louisville has, and Fleur de Tea out in Norton Commons. Note that kava is alcohol-free but psychoactive, and Cave Valley also serves kratom.
