Cave Valley Kava is Louisville's first kava lounge, opened in 2022 by a founder who goes by Stevie, in a small stone house on Crums Lane in the city's South End. Nothing served here contains alcohol. It doubles as an all-ages live music venue — shows run any night of the week — and the room holds a zine library, a rack of cassettes for sale and a standing commitment to local artists, which makes it function as a genuine third place rather than a shop with chairs. Alongside kava it pours teas, coffee and ginger kombucha, and blends smoothies with kratom, kava and CBD. Be clear on what that means: kava and kratom are alcohol-free but psychoactive, so this is a night out without alcohol rather than a guaranteed sober space.

Canary Club calls itself Louisville's first and only natural wine bar, and it is 100 per cent women-owned, run by Sarah Height and Chelsea Moore in a dive-bar room on South Shelby Street in Shelby Park. The Breeze is a combined coffee bar and wine shop in Shelby Park, run by Sarah Height and Chelsea Moore next door to their natural wine bar Canary Club. It bills itself as Louisville's first and only coffee bar and wine shop, opening in the morning for espresso from Cincinnati roaster Deeper Roots and running through the day as a bottle shop for natural, low-intervention wine. For non-drinkers it is the closest thing Louisville has to a non-alcoholic bottle shop: alongside the natural wine the shop carries a range of non-alcoholic wines and spirits, including a non-alcoholic Kentucky bourbon — which in this city is the bottle people actually want. Epiphany opened at the end of 2022 on Highland Avenue in the Original Highlands, describing itself as a cocktail bar, brewery and spirits house built around bringing the farm-to-table idea into drinks. That premise is why its non-alcoholic drinks work: when the programme already runs on local produce, house syrups and infusions, removing the alcohol removes one ingredient rather than the whole structure. The alcohol-free list rotates seasonally. Verified builds include the Orange Turmeric Limeade, made with local honey from Happy Jack's Pumpkin Farm, orange blossom water and mint, and a seasonal Rose Ginger Lemonade.
