Cosmic Roots opened at the tail end of March 2026 as part of the grand opening of Pavilion Street Market, a food hall built inside the former Treat Dreams space at 22965 Woodward Avenue in Downtown Ferndale. Of the market's stalls — which also include a travel-inspired vegan kitchen, a dumpling concept, and a Venezuelan arepa bar — Cosmic Roots is the lone non-food vendor, built entirely around alcohol-free kava, tea, and cacao.
The anchor drink is kava, a root native to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu, served here with a pineapple garnish. It reads like a slightly bitter, earthy tea, and brings on a tongue-tingling relaxation and mellow, giddy calm that lasts 40 minutes to an hour — with none of the intoxication of alcohol. Alongside it, Isabel Cali runs a rotating menu of house-blended herbal teas, including the hibiscus-and-yerba-mate Summa'love and the marshmallow-root Mint Marshmelli, plus Masala Chai, golden milk, and a Mexi Mushie Mocha made from fermented cacao and a medicinal mushroom blend with chili and Ceylon cinnamon. Chocolate truffles infused with medicinal mushrooms and scones round out the food side.
Cali is a certified alchemical herbalist trained at the School of Evolutionary Herbalism, with a background in yoga, somatic plant-medicine integration, and Peruvian shamanic lineage work. She first tried kava at 18 during a trip to Florida and came home telling herself Detroit needed a kava bar; after formal herbalism training, she sold herbal teas and kava at Detroit-area farmers markets before opening a permanent home for it at Pavilion Street Market. "Detroit needs a kava bar, we need spaces like this," she told MI Foodie Adventures in June 2026.
The space doubles as a small community hub, hosting pop-ups like tea-and-tarot readings and watercolor nights inside the market. In a neighborhood built around bars and breweries, Cosmic Roots is a genuine alcohol-free alternative — not a mocktail bolted onto a liquor list, but a bar built from the ground up without alcohol.
