Karmel Mall opened on Pleasant Avenue in Whittier as the first Somali shopping centre in the United States, and it now holds more than two hundred Somali and East African businesses across several floors of narrow corridors — clothing stalls, jewellers, barbers, salons and halal food counters. Hamdi Coffee sits on the first floor and does what the mall's tea counters have always done: it stays open into the late evening and functions as a social club. Men and women sit over tea for hours; the room hums well after most of the retail has shut. Its hours are the operative fact for anyone looking for somewhere alcohol-free to spend an evening — 6:30am to 10:30 or 11pm every day of the week, including Sunday, in a city where very little that is not a bar runs that long.

The drink to order is the house preparation the shop calls Somali Special Tea: whole milk steamed to a cappuccino-like foam with tea folded through it, sold for under three dollars. Beyond Beurre Blanc, writing about Somali drinks in the Twin Cities in December 2025, noted that "they call it the Somali Special Tea and it rings in at under $3." Alongside it are shaah, the spiced black tea steeped with cardamom and cinnamon that anchors Somali hospitality and is usually taken with sweet bread, and Somali coffee. Sambusas and savoury pastries are sold from the counter. This is a tea house rather than a bar and it should be visited on those terms: the pricing is a fraction of what a comparable drink costs at a specialty coffee shop, the room belongs to its regulars, and visitors are asked not to take photographs inside the mall. There is no alcohol anywhere on the premises. The practical notes are simple: Karmel Mall stands at 2910 Pleasant Avenue South, roughly three miles south-west of Cedar-Riverside, parking is on site, and Hamdi is on the first floor rather than upstairs among the clothing stalls. The tea is hand-brewed from scratch in large batches at intervals through the day, so it is worth asking when the last one went on.
