Juliet Italian Kitchen occupies a corner of Barton Springs Road, the strip that runs between Zilker Park and downtown, and it trades heavily on its patio — string lights, olive trees, a room that works as easily for a long lunch as for dinner. The cooking is straightforward Italian-American, and the bar supports it rather than competing with it.
The reason it belongs in an alcohol-free guide comes down to one technical detail. The house non-alcoholic drink Visit Austin names, New Year, New Me!, is built on a blueberry basil shrub. A shrub is a drinking vinegar — fruit, sugar and vinegar left to macerate for days — and it exists precisely to solve the problem non-alcoholic drinks have: without alcohol, a drink tends to fall flat and sweet, because alcohol is what normally supplies bite and length. A shrub restores both. Any bar making one has decided the alcohol-free side of the menu is worth real prep time, and that is a much stronger signal than the number of mocktails listed.
The Resolution Refresher runs alongside it, and the naming of both suggests the pair were introduced as a Dry January offering. That is worth knowing: seasonal drinks can rotate out, so it is worth asking what the current alcohol-free options are rather than arriving expecting these two specifically.
The grade is a considered 3 — the drinks are named and properly made, but this is a restaurant bar with a short alcohol-free selection rather than a parallel program. What it offers a non-drinker is a genuinely nice room, an easy patio, all-day trading from 11am, and a kitchen substantial enough that nobody at the table is there only to drink. For a group splitting between drinkers and non-drinkers over a long dinner, that combination matters more than the length of the alcohol-free list.
