Kato is a one-Michelin-star restaurant at Row DTLA in the downtown Arts District, where chef Jon Yao (Best Chef: California at the 2025 James Beard Awards) serves a Taiwanese- and Chinese-American tasting menu built from his San Gabriel Valley upbringing. For non-drinkers it is among the most thoughtfully considered fine-dining rooms in the city: bar director Austin Hennelly, who stopped drinking and built the program from scratch, assembled what The World's 50 Best calls an industry-leading zero-proof selection with nearly 100 options, plus a full alcohol-free pairing flight designed to move course by course alongside the menu. The NA cocktails are originals rather than substitutes, including the Garden Tonic, the Amazake Swizzle, and the Shiso Mule, and the program helped earn Hennelly the 2023 Michelin Guide California Exceptional Cocktail Award. Kato relocated from its original West LA strip mall to the much larger Row DTLA space in 2022 and has since ranked #1 on the LA Times 101 Best Restaurants and #26 on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.
