5137 York Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90042
Nativo opened on York Boulevard in 2020, and L.A. TACO covered it as a concept nine years in the making: a Latin-owned modern cantina with an emphasis on agave, rum and cerveza artesanal, with a Mexican food menu drawn from owner Gabriel Paredes' family roots in Northeast LA and, further back, in Guadalajara. Paredes runs it with his wife Corrissa Hernandez; it was their third business together, after Craft Beer Cellar in Eagle Rock and alongside Xelas in Boyle Heights. The room is a proper neighbourhood bar rather than a restaurant with a bar attached, walk-ins only, open late.
The reason it belongs in this directory is the zero-proof section, which is unusually serious for a cantina. It sits on the same cocktail menu as everything else under a heading that states the case without hedging - Zero Proof Cocktails, made with zero percent alcohol - and it runs to six drinks rather than the customary one or two. Five of them are built on Ritual Zero Proof's spirit alternatives, which means they are constructed the way the alcoholic versions are rather than being sweetened juice. The Margarita Mocktail uses Ritual Zero tequila with orange cordial, lime, agave and a choice of kosher or housemade Tajin salt, at $11. The Zero Proof Pina Colada is Ritual's rum alternative with pineapple, lime and coconut cream at $14. The Paloma Mocktail is the tequila alternative with grapefruit juice, lime, soda and kosher salt at $10, and the Zero Proof Mojito is the rum alternative with lime, sugar, mint and soda, also $10. The two that show the most intent are at the whisky end: a Zero Proof Whiskey Sour, shaken with egg whites at $15, and a Zero Proof Penicillin with lemon, ginger and honey, finished with a smoky botanical mist spray at $11 - a direct mirror of the alcoholic Penicillin on the list above it, which uses an Islay mist.
Practical notes. Nativo is closed Monday and Sunday, runs 5pm to midnight Tuesday through Thursday and 5pm to 2am on Friday and Saturday, and does not take reservations for the bar. Happy hour is Monday to Friday 5-7pm and all day Thursday, but the zero-proof list is priced off the standing menu rather than discounted.
