Bar Franca

Bar Franca occupies a shopfront on South Main Street in the Old Bank District, the stretch of the Historic Core where Downtown's bar scene is densest, and it describes itself as a stylish little Euro-cocktail sound bar. The sound part is not decoration: the programming leans on guest selectors and the room is built around the system, which puts it closer to a listening bar than to a cocktail lounge. Tall ceilings, floral wallpaper, a long bar and semi-separate lounge seating; golden lighting throughout.

The drink menu carries a section headed Zero Proof and Low ABV, and there are three house builds in it. Bonfire Water is fresh-pressed watermelon and hibiscus lengthened with Lyre's Italian Spritz, the non-alcoholic Aperol analogue, which gives it the bitter-orange backbone the fruit would otherwise lack. Espresso Esplatore is the most substantial of the three - Pathfinder Hemp and Root with espresso, tonic and citrus - and reads as a bar drink rather than a coffee. Palomanada is the simplest, grapefruit and citrus with agave, soda and salt, and it is the one to order if you want length rather than intensity. Alongside them the fridge carries Estrella Galicia's Zero Proof lager in cans, and two Stiegl radlers at 0.5% and 0.9%, which are worth flagging as genuinely low-alcohol rather than alcohol-free for anyone avoiding it entirely.

The practical detail that matters most here is the schedule, because it is unusual and easy to get wrong. Bar Franca opens three nights a week and it opens late: Thursday, Friday and Saturday only, 9pm to 2am, closed Sunday through Wednesday. That makes it a genuinely late-night option in a city where most kitchens and many bars have wound down by midnight, and it makes a wasted trip very easy on any other night. It is a short walk from the Pershing Square Metro station and sits among enough other Main Street bars that it works as one stop rather than a destination on its own. Note also that the low-ABV items share the section heading with the zero-proof ones, so read the menu rather than ordering by the header.
