1402 Beacon St, Brookline, MA 02446

Knight Moves occupies a white brick building on Beacon Street a short walk from Coolidge Corner, its front bay window filled with houseplants and a wooden chess table in the corner behind them. It was among the first board game cafes in Greater Boston and it operates on a model borrowed from bars rather than coffee shops: a cover charge buys a table and the run of the game library for the night, staff will teach a game to a table that has stalled over the rulebook, and the room fills with families, medical students, first dates and reunions until closing. Brookline.News profiled it in November 2025 under the headline 'At Knight Moves Cafe, a different kind of nightlife where play is the point,' which is an accurate description of what it does for the neighborhood.

The hours are what make it useful to someone who is not drinking. Weeknights run 5pm to 11pm and Friday and Saturday run to 2am, which is later than almost every cafe in the metro and as late as most Brookline bars. Nothing on the menu contains alcohol. The counter pulls espresso, americanos, cappuccinos and lattes with decaf available on any of them, makes chai, matcha and London Fog tea lattes, and runs a rotating seasonal list that has included a turmeric latte with ginger and peppercorn, a peaflower lemonade, a blackberry mocha and a strawberry matcha. Sodas come with the option of a vanilla ice cream float, and the milkshake list runs vanilla, chocolate, Nutella, strawberry, espresso and banana. Food is sandwiches on bread from When Pigs Fly, salads and snacks. One caveat worth stating plainly: the cafe does not serve alcohol but does allow guests to bring their own for a per-person food and beverage fee, so alcohol can be present at neighboring tables.
