Lighthouse sits on Apache Boulevard in Tempe, a few minutes from the ASU campus and squarely inside a district whose nightlife is otherwise organised around student drinking. That context is most of what makes it useful. A university town is a difficult place to not drink — the social default is aggressive, the venues are loud, and the alternatives usually close early — so an alcohol-free room that stays open until 2am on Friday and Saturday is filling a real gap rather than a theoretical one.

What regulars consistently describe is the room rather than the menu: cosy lighting, themed seating areas, and a layout built to encourage people to settle and talk, with a noise level low enough that conversation is actually possible. That is a deliberate design decision and a meaningful one. Much of what people miss when they stop drinking is not the alcohol but the long, unhurried evening a good bar makes possible, and a venue engineered for lingering delivers more of that than one engineered for turnover.

The menu runs kava — served strong, by most accounts — alongside kratom teas, mocktails and coffee, with drinks generally in the $10 to $20 range. The hours are wide: from noon Tuesday through Sunday, 4pm on Monday, and late at weekends, which covers the afternoon study crowd and the late-night one with the same room.

The standard caution applies and should not be softened by the friendly description. Kava is psychoactive and sedating, with documented case reports of liver injury; kratom acts on opioid receptors and carries dependence and withdrawal risk. Nothing here contains alcohol, and that is not the same as nothing here having an effect. For a designated driver or someone taking a night off, this is an easy recommendation. For someone in recovery from a substance-use disorder, it is a decision worth making with the full picture rather than on the strength of the phrase alcohol-free.
