Oren

Oren, on South Peoria in Brookside, has been paying attention to this category longer than anywhere else in Tulsa. When the local drinks writing first made the case for zero-proof cocktails in the city, Oren was already pouring The Seven Sisters, built on Seedlip Spice 94 — at a point when a non-alcoholic distilled spirit on an Oklahoma back bar was close to unheard of.

The drink the restaurant is known for now is the Maiden Manhattan, and it is an unusually grown-up piece of work. Cold brew coffee provides the dark, roasted backbone that whiskey would otherwise give; cranberry supplies tannic astringency; lemon and demerara balance it; and Angostura bitters finish it the way they would finish the original. It is stirred rather than shaken in character — dense, bitter and slow — which is exactly what a manhattan drinker misses when they stop drinking, and almost the opposite of what most mocktail menus offer.

That naming is doing something too. Calling it a Maiden Manhattan rather than inventing a fruit-themed name places it as a version of a classic, which is how someone ordering it wants to think about it.

Tulsa Remote named the drink in its January 2025 ranking of the city's best mocktails; the earlier Seedlip build is documented in local drinks coverage from 2020, which is what establishes the length of the commitment rather than the currency of that specific drink.

The restaurant keeps restaurant hours and they are tight: closed Monday and Tuesday entirely, dinner from 5pm Wednesday through Friday, and weekend service that adds brunch from 10am. Sunday evening service is short, 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Book ahead.

A note on the wider point Oren illustrates. The venues in this directory that do the best alcohol-free work are rarely the ones that set out to serve non-drinkers; they are the ones with the deepest technique, which then applies that technique to the problem. A kitchen that already makes its own demerara syrup and keeps good cold brew has most of a Maiden Manhattan on hand before anyone asks for it. That is why restaurants with serious bar programmes keep outperforming venues that advertise mocktails.
