1540 Frankfort Ave, Louisville, KY 40206
Pizza Lupo opened in 2017 in Butchertown, at the point where Frankfort Avenue begins, and its ownership tells you most of what the room is like: Adam Turla and Sarah Balliet, who play in the band Murder By Death, with Sarah's brother Max Balliet — of the well-liked Holy Molé — running the kitchen. The pizza is wood-fired Neapolitan, the wine list is natural and low-intervention, and the back bar leans hard into Italian amari.
A restaurant that serious about bitter Italian liqueur could be a difficult evening for someone not drinking, and Pizza Lupo has handled it with unusual plainness: there is a printed non-alcoholic menu, and it is described as being for designated drivers rather than dressed up as a wellness offering. That framing is worth something. It signals that not drinking is treated as an ordinary thing a customer might be doing on an ordinary Tuesday, which is closer to how most non-drinkers actually experience it than the language of mindfulness usually gets. The Chinotto Dream is the drink to order: chinotto is the bitter myrtle-leaved orange soda that Italians have drunk for a century, and it is the one mainstream soft drink with genuine bitterness, which makes it the natural spine for an alcohol-free aperitivo in a room built on amari.
Practically, the kitchen runs nightly from 5pm to 10pm, and the restaurant takes reservations through Resy — worth having at weekends, as the room is small and popular. Butchertown puts Copper & Kings' rooftop and its named alcohol-free list a few minutes away, and Volare and Fork & Barrel are further out the same avenue in Clifton, so this end of town is the easiest part of Louisville in which to assemble an evening without alcohol in it.
