Shibam Coffee

Shibam takes its name from the walled city in Yemen's Hadhramaut valley, and the brand was founded in Dearborn, Michigan before expanding south. The Alpharetta cafe held its soft opening on 22 February 2025 in a suite at 4000 North Point Parkway, near the North Point Mall corridor, and 285 South covered it a few weeks later as part of a wider piece on the cardamom-scented wave of Yemeni cafes arriving across metro Atlanta in time for Ramadan. Wasim Nasir is a co-owner. The publication framed the arrival in exactly the terms that matter to anyone looking for somewhere to go that is not a bar: these rooms provide an alternative to alcohol-centric bar culture while transplanting a coffeehouse tradition from the other side of the world. Alpharetta had almost nothing comparable before it opened.

The operating hours are the clearest signal of intent. Shibam trades from 8am to midnight Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and to 2am on Friday and Saturday, which is later than most licensed venues in the same suburb. The room is styled as an upscale lounge rather than a takeaway counter, with seating arranged for groups. Classic Yemeni coffee is served in the traditional preparation, spiced and aromatic, alongside a conventional espresso bar. The house list is where Shibam differs from its Yemeni peers: the Shibam Royal is the signature pour, and the cafe runs alcohol-free strawberry and raspberry mojitos, a dragon fruit lemonade and a pistachio iced latte that has become the default order for first-time visitors. Yemeni desserts and pastries — including the milk cakes that travel with this whole category — are sold at the counter. Nothing alcoholic is served or permitted on the premises, which makes it a straightforward recommendation for anyone in the north metro who wants a late room with no bar attached.
