The Kava Bar — Oak Cliff

The Kava Bar opened its Oak Cliff room on 15 February 2025 at 337 West Jefferson Boulevard, a short walk from Bishop Arts, and it is part of a small Texas group with siblings in Denton, North Dallas and Fort Worth. Its own line for the place is "no alcohol, no judgment, just a genuinely good night", and the room is built for that — booth seating, a softly lit bar, a covered patio and a private event space for up to forty. The menu is organised by category rather than by cocktail: kava, kratom, elixirs, coffee, tea and a short list of bites (house bliss balls at $4, a single-origin dark chocolate square at $3, a rotating pastry from a local bakery at $5). The Classic Shell is $8, ceremonial-grade kava served traditionally in a coconut bilo. The Bula at $9 softens it with coconut milk and vanilla. The Teal Latte at $7 is ceremonial matcha with oat milk and raw honey, and there is a genuine coffee programme underneath all of it.

This is an alcohol-free venue that is not substance-free, and normally that is the point at which we warn readers that a bar is selling psychoactive botanicals without telling anyone what is in them. The Kava Bar is the opposite, and it deserves credit for it. Its menu carries a printed dosage table — about 1.3g of kratom in an 8oz drink, a recommended maximum of 4g per drink and 16g in twenty-four hours — alongside explicit warnings not to use it while pregnant or nursing, not to drive or operate machinery afterwards, and, most unusually, a plain statement that anything which makes you feel good can become habit-forming, including caffeine, alcohol, sugar and kratom, and that anyone with a history of substance abuse should consider avoiding habit-forming substances altogether. That is more candour than almost any venue in this category offers, and it is exactly what someone in recovery needs in order to make their own decision. Kratom is 18-and-over here; under-18s are welcome with a guardian until 8pm and there is a kava-free menu for them. Two caveats: the elixirs include blue lotus and reishi and lion's mane mushrooms, which carry no equivalent warnings, and the venue's own website contains unfinished template content — placeholder phone numbers, a location page giving a different street address, and an origin story we could not corroborate anywhere.
